We wanted to find a place to stay for our family of 5. We have 3 kids under the age of 13 and were having a difficult time finding lodging in the Mendocino area for our large family. One of our kids found the Pointe Arena Lighthouse lodging while researching sights to see while in the area.
Wow!!! What a steal of a deal! We rented a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, with full kitchen and 2 fireplaces at an incredible price of $200.00 a night! The house was clean, warm and conveniently located to Mendocino, Little River and Fort Bragg. The beds were way more comfortable than any bed I have ever slept in on vacation. Each bed had Tempurpedic mattresses...ahhhh. The house was surrounded by beautiful ocean views from every window in the house. The kids were able to read up and explore the lighthouse and were thrilled to read the history about it. It was so different than your average hotel. Nice trails to hike, a gazebo for lunch plus ver y quietly located from all the hustle and bustle. With that said, you do have to factor in the fact that this lodging is as close to the ocean you can get so the outsides are a little salt weathered and have a scent of ocean to them. Anyone who has ever stayed on the beach will be familiar with this but overall I give this place a BIG thumbs up!!

My boyfriend just proposed to me at the Point Arena Lighthouse, and we LOVED the location so much we have decided to get married here too! The grounds/property around the lighthouse is well taken care of and of course you are right on the cliff over looking the ocean. The view from the top of the lighthouse is even more beautiful. There are 4 houses (3 bedroom/2 baths) on the property (there used to be 4 light keepers and their familes living in them back in the day), one of these houses has been split up into a smaller house (2 bedroom/1 bath) and then the doors were sealed to make a smaller 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment. The heat comes from either the fireplace or a space heater in the bedroom, but we stayed plenty warm. The outside of the housing looks a little weather worn/old, but the inside of the houses are pretty nice...fresh paint and new carpet, it is NOT a five star resort, HOWEVER it is cozy, well kept and clean. The location makes this worth every penny... a wonderful place to just relax. Bring a book, do a little driving up and down coastal Hwy 1, there is even a little cafe at the end of the road that looks like it serves up a great breakfast.

I bicycle down the California coast each summer with three to five buddies. In 2009, we decided to start further north than we had before. . . selecting Pt Arena as our starting point. We rented a car one way from SFO to Ft. Bragg, and began our actual riding at the Pt Arena Lighthouse. The lighthouse starting point was selected because it looked like a cool place from web descriptions and studying the map.

My impression of the hotel is that the owner has worked very hard to fix up the various "keepers" quarters and museum, but may be burnt out. There was only one person there when I arrived a little after 5PM: this was the museum attendant. She was a little unfriendly because she was counting her money and felt we should know that the museum was closed (even though the door was open, and there was no "closed" sign up). The owner (who is the only ones who can let you into the lighthouse itself) apparently leaves early, even on summer high-season days. (I notice now that the website says the museum closes at 3:30). Since the museum is the main checking in point for guests, after that time, keys have to be picked up from a night box and there is no one around to advise on dining or show off the place.

I think there are reasons why only two of the four keeper houses were rented the night we stayed there. There is an underwhelming approach to guests. There is no attempt to make people feel special, welcome, or pampered. It's a miminum effort. The rooms are clean, the location is nice, but there's nothing special about it. The landscaping around the doors to the keeper houses is in poor condition.

If cycling through this part of the California coast again in the future, I might stay here again. But my excitement and expectations would be seriously moderated from where they were. I will expect to have a clean three bedroom two bath house for $300 or so, but not much more. I won't expect a warm welcome, a thank you for my business, or people who love their work.

Just got back from Labor Day weekend at Point Arena Lighthouse. We really enjoyed the stay, the view, and the location. Our accomodations were spacious, beds were comfortable, woodstove worked great, cheery fire and plenty of firewood. Water pressure was great and everything was clean, only thing I would improve was that the Master bath needed new tile in bath surround.

We got some staples at the Point Arena General Store, including Thanksgiving Coffee along with helpful, happy service. Aftter checking in we had dinner around 8PM at the Rollerville Cafe. Everything was fresh & delicious, service was attentive and friendly. The next morning we had breakfast at The Record. Good smoothies for the kids and caffiene hit for the grownups.
