We had been through a very long "high season' at work, and had been looking forward to getting away, but not too far. We live in Cloverdale, and we were waiting for harvest to be over, so we could go to the coast and check out The Wharf Masters Inn, we had heard it was very peaceful, and all of our dreams of a restful, quiet, and very special place, were fullfilled here. We stayed in a room with a perfect ocean view, so perfect that if we would have chosen a room ourselves, this would have been it. We loved the sound of the waves all night long (we left our window open for fresh air during the night) We walked down the hill to the pier and watched a fantastic sunset, and afterwards a really great dinner at the restaurant by the pier, I don't remember the name, but it was a really good dinner, good prices and service. Anyway, our stay at The Wharf Master's was wonderful!

Notice the grounds, all of the wood carvings, and the office gals were so helpful and polite. The continental breakfast was fresh, and lots of choices, with a TV so we could watch the news of the day.
Don't miss staying here, we will be back the next time we need to get away!

The hotel was exactly what we were looking for. We had a hot tub, fireplace and balcony overlooking the ocean. There is a great pub right around the corner that serves great beer and wonderful lobster ravioli. Would DEFINTIELY recommend!!!!!!!

We went there on our anniversary in 12/2005 and again this spring in 04/2007, both trips were wonderful & romantic. You don't need the fancy suites or the Spectacular Whitewater room. A simple room with a fireplace, jacuzzi and deck is all you need to enjoy this inn. The staff is nice, but its easy to mainly avoid them all together as they have a late-check-in possibility that is great if you're coming up at the last minute and arrive after 9pm. The overall feeling is that of an INN, not a Hotel or a B&B. --There are more rooms than some inns but they still have the small vibe, however you're not in some one's house and definitely don't get breakfast served to you in bed. The grounds have neat statues, totem poles and art to check out, but the main beauty lies just steps away at the coast line,.

(*room choice*) The first time we asked for a cheap Hillside Room, but I think that we were upgraded without notice because we had almost a full ocean view, nearly the same place as this time where we requested an Ocean Splendor room.
(*amenities*) The fireplace is really nice and romantic, they provide plenty of logs to burn so there are no worries there.
The jetted tubs are huge and definitely add to the fun! They say not to use them at night after 10 pm or so but no one complained to us and we couldn't hear any one elses so I don't think that that one is too strict.
We wound have appreciated a CD player in the room, maybe as the alarm clock, but next time we'll just try to remember our own iPod and some speakers.

(*beds*) The beds are super comfy, I can't tell if it would be uncomfortable to sleep on a feather bed every single night but it is really great for a get-a-way and the queen four poster bed is so romantic! Very clean. Good housekeeping. There were no issues with wear-and-tear showing in the room for us, the reviews that talk about wallpaper peeling are either staying in the more expensive suite / house unnecessarily, or they visited years ago.
The rooms we've stayed in were both in great condition, there was a weed sprouting up through the deck, but since it had an attractive flower for a weed, I assume the housekeepers had decided to let it grow for a little while longer before pulling it, and it didn't bother us.

(*view/peeping neighbors*) The view from the deck was great. The first trip we didn't have any problems with this, but when we stayed in April we did have some one in the room directly across from us looking up, we got kinda weirded out when it really seemed like they were spying!(--They were sitting in what we figured was their restroom, first it was just one person and he had the window open, the blinds all the way opened and the light on, just staring up at us, then a second person came in and looked up at us and they turned off their light, but for about 20 minutes we saw a flashlight moving around through the window and eventually the light came back on, one person was still there and they closed the blinds at least a little ways and we got too weirded out and came in off of our deck where we had been enjoying the sound of the crashing waves and sipping champagne. Maybe they had a crappy room, we've never stayed on that side of the inn thats in the first row of buildings, in the same building as the lobby. Maybe they were just bored? No fault of the inn, just plain weird-o's looking for a free show, I think.-- )

(*breakfast*) The one thing that is kinda lacking, and that we usually skip by the second morning we're there, is the continental breakfast. Its just svenheart pastries and not too ripe fruit, with some cereal and toast options. I guess since I'm a health food nut I'm more picky than your average joe but some higher quality food would make a big difference and maybe make it worth the trip down to the cramped breakfast room.

(*dining out*) The organic mexican food place in down town pt. arena was kind of dissapointing, it said it was fresh and organic but the overwhelming bleach/chlorine stink inside made us have to wait for our food in the parking lot and then eat it outside too, and it was luke warm.
There are a few good local markets in town and in the neighboring town of gualala, so we were able to stock up on the essentials including some things to supplement the continental breakfast served at Wharfmaster's Inn. The town closes down at night so get food together early or you'll have to go without, there are no restaurants open after about 9pm, though maybe later different times of the year.

(*the area/activities*) Point Arena is soo small and remote its a good idea to plan out some activities to keep yourself entertained. The lighthouse it a great sight, the tour up to the top of the lighthouse is cool but if you go at the very end of the day the guide might be getting burn out and be rushed/less informational. There is a theater in town but they only have some shows certain nights, so plan accordingly. The offer live music as well as movies. Its very historic and worth looking around. Walking from the inn down to the pier and beach is a great photo op, the inn looks serene nestled up on the hill, the postcard-like image looking up from the pier to your room is almost as good as looking down from your deck out onto the pier and water.

(*recommended*)All in all it is our dream relaxation/escape weekend trip. They usually have rooms when we call form Bodega Bay and its on;y a couple of hours up the coast from there. We plan to stay there ion the future. We are recommending it to our friends. Its a great value for the price and the remoteness only adds to the allure.
We are seriously considering tying the knot here, the hotel has great memories and we've always had the most relaxing and pleasant experiences there.

Caveat Emtour.
Certain room amenities are left out in online info, paper adds and when you call.
If you want the romantic & relaxing Jacuzzi tub or 4 post bed and settle for a Spectacular “Whitewater” room with "Disabilities Access" you give that up . You might be informed of this when you call.
If you see an internet special entitled to one of the "Whitewater" rooms that have the best ocean views and amenities for a better price. Make clear that special is what you want. Know the rooms number your getting & where it is in advance so you dont get downgraded unwittingly. I almost did. Mistakes of honest oversights & miscommunications? Maybe, but try to get an e-mail verification if possible to avoid this. With often limited rooms. If you've driven a long way. You may be stuck with the wrong room with no recourse.
Fit and finish well like most coastal buildings the place is dated with wear. The new owners are trying I can tell things are changing. Improvements however & attention to certain renovation details are sloppy with amateur workmanship and selection.
Some new coats of paint needed outdoors. New paint indoors, but window frames and trim inside are slopped with paint.
Newer sink faucets were to short for average hands.
My particular room had a round toilet seat on an elongated toilet?
TV is larger then where it sits causing the trim or moldings to be loose and partly falling off. The TV "cable" reception is poor antenna quality. Occasionally a large black box blocked most of the screen. Annoying!?!
When you get cold there is wall heater behind the sofa chair that’s easy to miss.
Private Deck? On some decks. I could see the neighbors deck & face from my bed with the shades up.
Window shades tattered and many times repaired drawstrings.
No Disabled reserved parking near the room or anywhere on the property.
Parking near the rooms is limited and later arrivals on a no vacancy night will likely be downhill on the lower parking.
Cheap lawn chairs make for deck seating.
Hotel Service person spoke Spanish and did not understand any of my "I only need fresh towels" English.
The manner in which I found this place is how it is kept.
Not living up to its full potential & missing a chance to really shine, but is the general standard along the Eureka to Bodega Bay coast.
Clean & livable with a flexible white glove. Its not Beverly Hillbillies but nowhere near Beverly Hills.

We enjoyed our stay at Wharf Master's Inn. The room was spacious and romantic. The fireplace was a wonderful touch. Our whirlpool failed to work the first night we were there but they had it fixed promptly. (A note about their whirlpools, they allow usage only until 10 p.m. so the noise does not bother other guests, although we never heard any one's)

I would warn that Point Arena is not the most convenient place if your plans are to go back and forth to Mendocino. Even though it is only 30 miles away, Highway One is a slow drive, especially at night. Point Arena itself is a quaint town without many attractions to speak of, but perfect for a romantic get away.

I would recommend the inn for an escape weekend and will happily go back again.

We stayed at the Wharfmaster's Inn over Easter weekend. There were several nice things about the stay. In particular, we enjoyed the fountain in the courtyard, the oversized tub and the nice toiletries. Also, the staff was pleasant and our room opened onto a very nice deck.

There were a few problems, however. First, our room was slightly shabby and showed signs of shoddy maintenance (i.e. the bathtub handle came off, sloppy faucet repairs, incorrectly mounted recessed lighting, missing chain lock, etc.). Second, our room did not have a shower which was a bit of an inconvenience. Third, the bed was way too soft and seemed to slant at a weird angle. It could be a matter of preference, but still I woke up sore. Finally, we were on the bottom floor, and the noise from up above us was terrible. Our upstairs neighbors weren't trying to be loud - they were simply walking, using their whirlpool tub and going about their business - but the noise really bothered us. In particular, when they turned on the jets it sounded as if we were in the cargo hold of an airplane.

Overall, our stay was not very comfortable but given the price we paid, we weren't expecting perfection. Still, the next time we go to Mendocino County, we plan to spend a little more in hopes of finding better accommodations.

We stayed there during the week, and took advantage of a midweek special. We got, what we were convinced had to be the best view in the place. It was amazing. We arrived at night, and didn't get to see the view, until morning. We woke up around 7 or 7:30 and watched fishermen load their boats up to head out for seat. We had a 120 degree view of the ocean (and the parts that were blocked, were blocked by the cliffs of the harbor! not bad at all!). The next morning we watched whales FROM OUR BED.

The inn is perched on a cliff above a small market place at the harbor. At first I thought it was a bit of a bummer that the market was there, but in the end, it didn't bother us whatsoever, it still felt very private, and it actually provided us some entertainment when we felt like people watching.. We felt like we could see them, but no one was looking at us.

The room itself could use some improvement. A lot of the workmanship is very poor. The fixtures hung loose from the sink and tub. But the Tub was an excellent way to enjoy chocolates and wine at the end of the day.

The Town of Point Arena was described as being run down or a little "dumpy" in some other other reviews, but we really liked it. We felt it was very "small coastal town", but kept up quite well, considering the age of most of the buildings.

The hotel staff was friendly. All in all we'd certainly go back despite some of maintenance needs. Hopefully if they do decide to fix those things, the price doesn't go up, because we got an awesome deal, and would hate to pay more next time.
