Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The Point Arena Lighthouse stands as an iconic figure on the landscape of the American Pacific Coast. No other lighthouse offers such a fully interactive experience in the exchange between history, science and natural beauty. Sometimes brilliantly sunny, other times fog-shrouded and mysterious, always ruggedly beautiful, the lighthouse is a place to find something different, a place where the romance is real and the experience is profound. Surrounded by water on three sides, and shouldered adjacent to the Point Arena/Stornetta Public Lands, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the premiere visitor destination in Mendocino County. It is also one of the best whale watching spots on the North Coast, with the annual Gray Whale migration from late November through May, Humpbacks throughout the year, the occasional pod of transient Killer Whales and even Blue Whales. Watch for the spouts, tails and breaches from the top of the Tower and from the trails and gazebo. With nightly lodging and tours of the lighthouse offered daily, what will you discover on your next visit?

It gets chilly at sunset though, so make sure you have warm layers and a comfy portable chair. Also note that the lighthouse itself will be CLOSED at sunset, but there are a couple of viewpoints on the approach road where you can park your car and chill out. The view is spectacular as you will be perched on a cliff with waves breaking over the rocks below with the lighthouse further down the coast baked in the glow of the setting sun :)

The long coastal drive to this lighthouse allows for numerous places to take pictures that feature the rugged coast, birds with the lighthouse in the background. Well worth the drive out to the point!!

Point Arena Lighthouse and Museum is a worthwhile visit. Located off of highway1 it's along the most beautiful and rugged coastline of California. Devils Punchbowl, is located directly in front of the Lightthouse. The Museum s open 7 days a week, and you can climb to the top of the lighthouse, into the Glass top, and out onto the circular observation area just below the top. Spectacular views of the coastline and surrounding 360 degree views.

Located just a few miles from where the San Andreas Fault meets the sea.

This is a simple quick look see at the History of this Lighthouse which also happens to be the closest point of land to the Hawaiian Islands. Tour time total to see the museum and climb the lighthouse can be done in 20 minutes, but you will find yourself unrushed and possibly picnicking at on of the tables along the cliffs.

Worth the time

This Lighthouse and Museum is a nice spot and good example of California coastal lighthouses. The local community seems to take great pride in this location and it is well preserved and nicely presented. I am not sure why this is not part of the California State Park system but not to worry since the local community and foundation appear to present it well and keep it proud. I would recommend visiting and supporting this location just for that reason alone. This is a beautiful location even for all lighthouses being on the coast and ocean. They have a very nice museum and story plus a great giftshop. The only disappointment was our tour and the lack of any comments or guidance on the tour? I see many good reviews about the knowledgeable staff and guides but we must have missed that person. It could be because it was just after July 4th holiday and I hear they were very busy but I was very disappointed not to get more info on the Lighthouse tour itself. All in all, I would definitely recommend this spot as a great part of history and a spot of beauty and relaxation.

Just the story alone about the first lighthouse being demolished in the 1906 historical earthquake is interesting enough but getting to see the First Order Fresnel Lens and climbing to the top of the lighthouse to see out and get a very good docent-led tour ~ it's totally worth the price of entrance.
