Owner description: The Point Arena Lighthouse stands as an iconic figure on the landscape of the American Pacific Coast. No other lighthouse offers such a fully interactive experience in the exchange between history, science and natural beauty. Sometimes brilliantly sunny, other times fog-shrouded and mysterious, always ruggedly beautiful, the lighthouse is a place to find something different, a place where the romance is real and the experience is profound. Surrounded by water on three sides, and shouldered adjacent to the Point Arena/Stornetta Public Lands, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the premiere visitor destination in Mendocino County. It is also one of the best whale watching spots on the North Coast, with the annual Gray Whale migration from late November through May, Humpbacks throughout the year, the occasional pod of transient Killer Whales and even Blue Whales. Watch for the spouts, tails and breaches from the top of the Tower and from the trails and gazebo. With nightly lodging and tours of the lighthouse offered daily, what will you discover on your next visit?

“Great View and Interesting History!”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Loved the history and the view, although it was foggy, and the person giving the tour had to tell us what we would have seen if it had been clearer. My recommendation for the future would be that they take pictures on clear days, and at least have 10" X 12" photos they could show what people see on clear days, and vice versa for foggy days, so that people can experience both. Difficult and scary climb for some, but most fit people are able to handle it. You even get to go outside and experience the weather in a fenced area at the top of the lighthouse.

“A site to see”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

This is a fun and educational experience; however, be aware there are a lot of steps to the top! The view is worth the climb, and you will be greeted by a well-informed guide.

“Bummer - Entry Fee”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

It was absolutely beautiful area, but we did not feel like paying the entry fee so we did not see the lighthouse close up.

“History galore!”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Love the "tour" and info provided about this location. The associated gift shop has a lot of unusual items that are worth a look to take home or to share as gifts. Staff are extra friendly and full of intormation.

“Amazing Experience”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

Run by a nonprofit, this lighthouse provides incredible vistas, a great historical perspective and exercise. Climb the 145 stairs to the top of the lighthouse for 360 degree views up and down the coast, out to the ocean and inland. It's like being in a helicopter with out all the engine noise. The volunteer docents are well informed and pleasant. The gift store has great items and the interpretive exhibits are truly informative and well layed out. If you are there during the whale migration, be patient. You will be rewarded.
