Sozo Sushi Restaurant
2835 Hopyard Rd, - Pleasanton, CA 94588
We have been to Sozo's for lunch at least 10 times and have enjoyed the food all but once. The one time was ridiculously spicy, even though we ordered mild spice. Other than that time the food has been very good. We have not been there for dinner, but it is our place for a Japanese lunch when we are in Plaesanton.
Sozo's offers complimentary miso soup and edamame upon arrival which is such a bonus in addition to their reasonable prices, The only problem with Sozo's is sometimes they have really mediocre service. Getting a refill of water can be like pulling teeth. There is one waitress who often has bad customer service, but the taste of bento boxes, sushi and awesome prices compensate for her bad attitude. Sozo's is still my top choice for a sushi restaurant in the Pleasanton area.
We usually order spicy tuna dish, sushi and/or bento box lunch. The bento box has a lot of food and the tempura is perfectly cooked. Light batter that is not greasy at all. The bento box comes with salmon, beef or chicken, your choice. The spicy tuna and other dishes are prepared well, taste good and quantities are more than fair.
In general, food portions are sufficient, super crispy tempura, and delicious bento boxes. Fish/Sushi was fresh with reasonable prices. Service was a little slow and could be improved.
Now, for the dessert: The dessert alone is worth the experience to go to Sozo. I know fried ice cream is a rather popular novelty dessert. We ordered one to share, and loved the hot, chewy crust with an icy creamy inside. Hot and cold, chewy and creamy, it was an excellent dessert to finish a nice meal.
