“Pleasant Stay in Pleasant Hill”

We stayed one night with our two kids using our rewards points. This is a basic Courtyard hotel that has been well maintained. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were rooms. It was clean with a decent pool area for the kids. Breakfast is available for purchase in the Courtyard Cafe. My only complaint about this property was they still have double beds, not queens.

We enjoyed this hotel. Staff was friendly when we checked in and offered a bigger room with a couch/bed. Room was nice a clean. Lots of resturants with in walking distance and Rite Aid across the parking lot for last minute items we forgot. My daughter enjoyed the indoor pool/spa and exercise room. Price was good and parking free! I would stay again.

For a Courtyard of the first generation this hotel is in remarkably good condition. Yes, it still has the old furniture but everything looks proper. Check-in was quick and friendly, special wishes were honored. What makes this hotel a real great place to stay is the location. Everything you may need or want is within walking distance: lots of restaurants like Greek, Italian, Mexican, Steakhouse plus a Boston Market right in front of the hotel entrance. There are a supermarket, Borders, Staples and even a 16 screen movie theater nearby (no need for a car). A note from the management announces that the hotel will undergo a total renovation in 2011. Nice to know: A good hotel may become even better. By the way, if you are a light sleeper ask for a room facing the parking lot.

The Courtyard in Pleasant Hill was a great place to stay for our weekend visit to San Francisco. We chose this place because of its proximity to family. It was an easy drive from the SF Airport and is in a great location. There are several different restaurants that are walking distance from the hotel, as well as a grocery store and a pharmacy. Parking is plentiful in their lot. The rooms are clean, and the staff was friendly. The only negative thing about this place was the rather rude security guard. My cousin was in the indoor pool area with her nieces when the security guard rudely told her that they all needed to leave because the pool was closed. There was no one else in the pool, and I feel he did not need to be so harsh. A simple, "Ma'am, the pool is closing now" would have been sufficient. Other than that, we had a great experience at this Courtyard.

Although the area around this hotel is not especially interesting to explore in and of itself (chain stores everywhere), it's a great location in terms of easy access to fast food, groceries, + pharmacies. This Marriott shares a parking lot with a Boston Market + Rite Aid. Within 5 minutes drive, you can reach Borders Books+Music; Michaels Arts+Crafts; Kohl's; Goodwill; Safeway grocery store; Tuesday Morning; and more. Its convenient location makes this Marriott a great option for families or business travelers. The room itself was basic, but clean, and met all of my needs. The place can get noisy, but nothing ear plugs can't take care of. I will definitely stay here again if I had to come back for business!

Having stayed at Courtyards on opposite sides of the country within a three-week period, I can say that all Courtyards are not the same. One thing we noted at both, though: these hotels were spotless.

Our stay in Pleasant Hill began with a courteous and professional check-in. In fact, throughout our stay, we noted the front desk staff greeted everybody who walked past the desk.

The beds in this room were really comfortable and we slept very well. Our room was clean and well-maintained, and the bathroom, especially, was pristine. The housekeeping staff is to be commended. We did note some traffic noise (not enough to keep us awake, though).

There is a welcoming lobby sitting area with several stand-up computers that provide speedy and convenient Internet access. The pool area is adjacent to the lobby, and the small workout room offers two treadmills, a recumbent bike, an elliptical machine, and a weight bench.

Having recently stayed at a Courtyard in Virginia where the breakfast was superior, we were looking forward to a similar experience during this stay. Unfortunately, on the two days we ate here, it was a very different scenario, to the point that we strolled down to the nearby Peets on the remaining mornings of our stay.

If you were to try to find a Courtyard breakfast that exemplified the high standards of the Courtyard brand, well, this would NOT be it. Everything you’d expect to be there is there, just not the selection you’d find elsewhere. (The exception is the sweet breads and muffins – we did feel these were well-stocked.) Additionally, the buffet area is poorly laid out, so if somebody is by the toaster buttering their toast, it is virtually impossible to access the toaster or bread or the waffle maker.

The staff in the breakfast area does what they’re paid to do and not with a welcoming attitude. Somehow these employees manage to skip the daily Marriott pep call, I think. When we received our breakfast check the first morning, we noted that an additional dollar had been added to each breakfast. I checked the menu again, then asked the server for clarification. She scrounged around the menu and flyers on our table for a few seconds, then walked over to an empty table, scrounged around there, returned to our table and gave me a flyer explaining that Marriott was soliciting voluntary donations to the Children’s Miracle Network, hence the additional dollar added to each breakfast. This was perplexing to us, as we weren’t asked before being presented with the check whether we wanted to contribute (and since we donate to the charities of our own choosing, we wouldn’t have elected to make this contribution). She offered to take it off, which would make us look like bitter Scrooges, so we told her to keep it on. Then I turned to the table next to us and asked those people if they knew about that, and they said no, they didn’t. “It seems,” the woman said, “it’s an involuntary voluntary contribution.” (Following day, same server: as we were being seated, I asked her to not add the additional “voluntary” donation, and she looked at me as if she couldn’t understand what I was saying. C’mon.)

We did note later that there is a Children’s Miracle Network display in the lobby explaining options for voluntary donations. No mention of the involuntary voluntary donation option….

The hotel is across the street from a nice shopping area, and close to a beautiful city center complex built around a peaceful pond with fountains and benches. BART is only a couple of miles away, making it easy to get to Berkeley or San Francisco. We made it into the City one day for dim sum at our favorite dim sum place, Yank Sing.

Aside from the “off” breakfast situation, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, location, pool & exercise room, front desk staff, housekeeping
  • Disliked — Breakfast staff, food selections, & "voluntary" donation added to bill
