The El Dorado National Forest is one of those close-by treasures that most people in the region aren't even aware of. With acres of public land, trails, and easy access, it's a great place to hang out when it's too snowy to head up the hill!

We camped out near Pollock Pines for two days. This place is amazingly breathtaking; we were surrounded with pine and fir trees and were able to hear the creek from our campsite. The weather was absolutely gorgeous in August...low 90s in the day and mid 60s at night.

You will have to get a fire permit from the visitor center (off of IceHouse Road), but since they were closed when we arrived, but spotted a ranger and she wrote us up one.

We hiked up to Bassi Falls the first day (about 1.2 miles each way). Its an easy hike but can get a little tricky as there are no signs. We followed the trail and used the creek to guide us. Bassi Falls is gorgeous...the water, although freezing, was refreshing in 90 degree heat.

The second day we packed up and headed toward Fashoda Beach and swam in the Union Valley reservoir. We had our own private beach there. Besides swimming, jet skiing, and boating are options.

I would definitely recommend this place for camping in the summer. And its just 3 hours outside of the SF Bay Area!
