“Nice Hotel, Beautiful View”
Reviewed September 6, 2006

The View is definately the highlight at this hotel. Very close to the beach. All rooms facing the ocean, not the 101 freeway. Everything orderly, clean, and pleasant. My wife and I had occasional noise issues with the neighbors. The floor made noises when people walked around the room above ours (#703), and we could hear conversations through the adjoining room doors as if they were paper-thin. Aside from that, great proximity to McClintock's and other nice restaurants. Short drive to Arroyo Grande, the Pismo Beach pier, and the Sand Dunes.

We wouldn't have paid the travel web site prices for this hotel. AAA had a smokin' "mid-week" deal. We'd stay there again, but next time we'll take the top floor.

  • Liked — View, Location Directly Above the Beach
  • Disliked — Occasional Noise Between Rooms, Not too big a deal
  • Tips/Secrets — Stay on the top floor (View, Security, No Noise From Above); AAA mid-week special

Based on reviews on this website, we stopped at this Best Western after a visit to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon (highly recommended). We received a great rate from my corporate travel website. The view from our room was absolutely gorgeous. We liked the spacious feel of our upper level room with its cathedral ceiling. Very comfy beds, very clean.

We enjoyed our little adventure walking down to the beach, but be advised, there is no swimming on this beach! Very lovely, though, worth walking down to visit, with nice photo ops.

It seemed as though quite a few guests were there on a romantic getaway. I would recommend staying here as a stop on the way to somewhere else.

This appears to be a new place, wonderfully laid out with all room easy to access. I think all the rooms have a water view and balcony or patio. It is small, quiet, and beautifully landscaped, with a waterfront gazebo and a small walking path. It's also possible to get down to the beach. The room was large, clean, nice, and quiet. This will be our preferred place in Pismo Beach from now on.

Stopped here by chance to see if they had a room. Fortunately for us, they did. What a wonderful place to stay. The room was very nice, roomy and comfortable. The balcony had a fantastic ocean view. It was quiet, peaceful and serene. The only thing I'd suggest is to ask for an upstairs room. We had big-foot staying in the room above us, and could hear every step it took. The pool area is very nice, and there is a trail to the beach. Wear hiking boots or footwear that gives you a grip if you plan on going to the beach (which is worth the short walk). The end of the trail to the beach is a little washed out, so you'll want footwear that gives you steady footing rather than sliding down the end of the walk as I did. Still, though, it was a great find and although a bit pricey, the view alone is worth the price. We saw a huge flock of pelicans, otters, seals, baby seagulls, cotton tail rabbits. There are several great restaurants near this hotel, some within walking distance. It really was a special place and we'll definitely stay there again.

The view from the hotel is beautiful. It sits on a cliff (you can walk down to beach on a path) and gives you a full view and full sound effects of the ocean. The grounds are pretty and bunnies and squirrels come out at dusk. The room was spotless and fully equppied with all you need. The pool and jacuzzi is clean and sheltered by glass allowing you to sit in the pool and enjoy the ocean view. The breakfast (included) has options and was served in a nice little breakfast room. The only downside is the hotel sits close to the freeway and big trucks run all night. Even with the noise in mind, I would stay here again and recommend it to others.

Weather I’m planning an extended visit or a one night stay at a hotel; I always consult Trip Advisor because of its accurate reviews. My boyfriend and I were traveling down the PCH and stayed at the Shelter Cove Lodge for one night (May 24th). We arrived at the hotel around 7pm and check-in was a breeze. Rooms are big, clean, and very comfortable. Our room had an ocean view that we enjoyed from our private balcony. The pool and hot tub are open till 10pm so after a long day of hiking in Big Sur, it was so nice to relax. The continental breakfast was nice especially when enjoyed by the pool. The property is well maintained and manicured and set on a beautiful cliff with grand views of the ocean and mountains. Over all the hotel was great and if we’re ever in the area we would stay again. One more thing, take the time to explore the beach below. The trip down may be bumpy but well worth it.

Actually I would give the Shelter Cove three and a half stars, as the view and beach walk more than compensate for any shortcomings. Yes, there are scuffs and dings in the room (#605) but we also had a nice balcony overlooking the cliffs and part of the town. The bed itself was fine--mattress firm enough and plenty of pillows, albeit rather thin (double them under!). And there is plenty of juice, coffee, cold cereal, pastries (probably packaged) to take back to the room. But do come here for the view and the walk down to the beach and various coves.

But there is a slight problem with the reservation system, especially the Best Western site. We were not permitted to book for only one night and the rate for two nights was $70 more than what we actually paid. So after checking Expedia, we found a rate valid for one night. Given that there were several rooms available, I was surprised that the hotel did not offer one-night stays (Sunday). But the receptionists were pleasant enough and did not hassle us over using Expedia's discounted rates. Giuseppi's (Italian) restaurant a mile down the road in town provides ample variety. My blue nose bass was superb as is the wine list. Full bar available, no reservations.

We would gladly stay here again simply because of the maagnificent views, clean rooms, and continental breakfast.
