Our friends, my wife and I went to the well known Splash cafe. We were pleased withe the food (especially the fish tacos). The service was good. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Thank Tom B

I am a guy who likes my soup in a bread bowl. This tiny diner didn't let me down. I have had some pretty good clam chowder. I was pleasantly surprised on how good their chowder was. But it is really the sour dough bread that can make a soup for me (forget the calories). Their bread was very fresh and reasonably sized. The accomodations were spartan & our group of eight could find no room at the inn so we ate at a long counter. The line to order went out onto the street. Many of the other local restaurants on the street weren't so fortunate customer demand. Parking was difficult even for motorcycle riders (we can find parking almost anywhere). The location near the pier was very appealing & a corner store even had Motor Oil Ice Cream but that is a story for another time.

We love to stop at Splash for chowder whenever we head to Big Sur, Carmel or SFO on the scenic route. It hasn't changed a bit since Lauren (now 54) was a little kid: wait in a bit of a line, place your order and pay. Find a seat on hard benches or maybe some stand up counter space and look at stupid stickers and weird stuff on the walls. Fidget a little. It's loud and steamy and frenzied and there are lots of confused tourists looking for more or different. Soon, they yell your name as the server girls walk around looking for you. And then.... wow! Simply the creamiest, richest, clammiest chowder ever... sweet not too salty and thank heaven we are married now so we can split it... it's just too rich for one. We also split a yummy order of fried clams (comes with fries that we just shine on). And we split a root beer. And then we get back in the car and drive on to wherever we're going. And wonder whether we should have sent frozen chowder to family members because it's just so, so good. Then we usually wish they had cole slaw because you just know it'd be excellent. This isn't a fine dining place, and it isn't a place you'll want to linger. It's not a competition or even a fabulous deal. It IS great soup, good clams, and a special Central Coast experience. Please don't change a thing!

Ugly restaurant. Food is OK, but nothing special. Yet they wait in line for this place. Go figure? Perhaps I'm too picky.
