“Great location, but wished upper floor tenants were "light"er on the feet”
Reviewed January 25, 2009

The Lighthouse is on a bluff overlooking the ocean. You walk behind the property and south across two other properties and down a steep stairwell to reach the beach. Nice walk from there to the pier downtown.
Property is newer and the suites are great for family with kids. Two separate rooms and baths with tiny fridge/microwave.
Ask for the upper floors. People above us to us were so noisy it was hard to sleep.
Breakfast in the morning is standard waffle maker, cold cereal, and rolls, juice etc. but you are in a room looking out to the ocean.
The hot tub and pool were nice. There is a play are for children with golf; tiny chess; etc.

Staff was friendly and helpful.

  • Liked — pool and play area; proximity to downtown
  • Disliked — Not on the beach; noise from upstairs as kids ran around

We are a family of 5 travelling around the west coast of California on our holiday for the first time to the States, and we wanted somewhere to stay between Anaheim and San Francisco.

We arrived at Pismo Lighthouse Suites middle of the afternoon, after setting off from Anaheim early morning.

We had booked a family suite with partial ocean views, and on arrival we were very happy with the suite that they had allocated for us.

There were 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. One bedroom had a king bed and bathroom and the second bedroom was connected by an internal door which contained 2 queen size beds plus the second bathroom. The suite was very clean and nicely decorated.

We had a small balcony where you could stand out on and see the sea.

Outside our suite was an area the kids could play table tennis, badmington and they had a giant chess set, so the kids had to pick up and carry the chess pieces around. There was also a heated swimming pool which our crazy children went in.

The hotel also had a laundry area so it was quite easy for me to wash all our clothes after going to Disneyland the day before.

We were only here for 1 night but it was very nice.

This was a great choice for a place to stay. However, one of the main factors in our decision was the life-sized chess game. Unfortunately, the deck was being resurfaced, so the chess game was unavailable, as were the other outdoor games. It wasn't a big deal, though, since we didn't really have time to play anyway.

The room layout was great for our family, offering privacy for each of the 2 main factions. My kids' favorite thing about Pismo Beach was the shells they found on the beach. You have to walk about 4 or 5 properties south to find the stairs that go down to the beach. But once there, the beach is wide and firm and full of shells. The whole city offerred a great sunset experience.

Had a nice stay of four nights. One night there was noise from the room above but complaints to the front desk got it sorted out. The double suite with two bathrooms was a good way to share with teen children, enough privacy for both sides.

The breakfast was good, as a "continental" type. One morning my wife brought cooked ham in to have some protein, but generally I would say this is a good breakfast with lots of variety, just generally carb-based (with hard-boiled eggs also available).

Renovations were underway to the outdoor areas but affected us little. The hot tub was nice and the glass around it (to cut the wind) very carefully cleaned each morning.

The last morning, a whole flock of pelicans was perched on the hillside to soak up some rays. A nice location.

  • Liked — this area has a lot of low-key activities to offer
  • Disliked — flaky internet

Very nice hotel. We had a first floor oceanfront king suite. Best thing ever. The hotel sits on the cliff above the beach and ocean. The view is lovely and the most wonderful thing is being able to leave the sliding door open and listen to the crashing waves all day and night.

Also having the suite was great because we could just put our kid to bed in the next room and hang out in the living room or outside in our patio and listen to the waves all night. There were two bathrooms which was pretty convenient. I could totally see two couples or large families staying here comfortably. There was plenty of room for just the 3 of us. The room was clean and well-stocked with Bath & Body Works items (bonus for my husband because he loves BBW shampoo). Also the kitchenette was really useful -- a nice small fridge, wet bar and cabinets if you need them.

I've read some complaints on the complimentary continental breakfast which I thought were unfounded. Continental breakfasts aren't meant to be any more than danishes and coffee and I thought the breakfast they offered went way beyond that. There was a variety of cold cereals and hot (oatmeal in packets with hot water available), bagels & cream cheese (toaster available), a bunch of different danishes, fruit cocktail, mini Yoplait yogurts, oranges, apples, and of course coffee, tea, milk and 4 different fruit juices. The best thing was the waffle maker. It's DIY but there are instructions and staff on hand to help if you need it. Fellow visitors helped me. :) I looked forward to making my waffles every morning! Mmm...hot waffles with butter & syrup...

I did agree somewhat with the complaints on the noise level. The first couple of days weren't so bad because we didn't have neighbors above us but once the room was occupied we could hear every foot step and door close. I admit I was a bit annoyed by that but what could you do? ;) Also in the morning the housecleaning staff is pretty loud as they go from floor to floor with their carts and I could always hear their walkie-talkies going off. And by morning I mean before 8am which I think is still early for so much noise.

I agree w/everyone about the hike to the beach. The walk over isn't bad but the steps leading down to the beach are really steep and uneven. We took our 3 yr old son down there and it was worth it even though i was so exhausted from all the steps. :)

All in all it was a very relaxing few days and I would definitely stay there again.

Another good last minute rate on expedia.com (wait until the morning of your stay and they often drop the rate by $30-40), we paid around $100.

We were upgraded to a king suite on check in as they were over booked on queen rooms. The rooms are absolutely huge - we spent the first half an hour running between the two bedrooms trying to decide which one to sleep in. I can imagine if you're a family or two couples travelling together these represent excellent value for money.

The rooms are well decorated, clean and comfortable - a litte bit worn. Free wi-fi was a godsend as we needed to make onward travel arrangements. We had a slight issue with our air-con it was making a funny clanking noise all night so we found it a little difficult to get to sleep (although we had colds too so that probably didn't help). But didn't have any issues with traffic noise or other people.

The free breakfast in the morning, to be honest, is probably worth a miss. We went down at 9.45 (they serve until 10am) and it looked like a bomb had dropped. People everywhere, food everywhere, not particularly appetising. And the usual high-sugar, unhealthy brekkies that we have come to find in many of these hotels (donuts, cookies, waffles).

We didn't check out any of the local restaurants but there is plenty of choice and they seemed to be open until quite late. In an emergency, there are 24 hour fast food outlets just a short drive south down the 101 next to the outlet centre.
