Kennedy Meadows Resort & Pack Station
Reviewed June 22, 2012

We have been going to Kennedy Meadows for over 25 years. Could not think of a better place for a vacation with family and friends. Horseback riding, hiking, fishing, evening camp fires -- no television - no cell phone service -- a place to sit back, relax and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Small to large cabins accomodate every size group and camping (not part of resort and first come policy) within a mile down the road for those in your group who are unable to reserve a cabin. Restaurant for those who aren't too excited about bbqing every night. Cabins with kitchens are equiped with all most everything you need to prepare meals. Small gas stove (4 burners) with oven nice too! You might want to bring an extra blanket for those really chilly nights!

Perfect gathering place for family reunions, birthdays, wedding, memorial rides...etc

Kennedy Meadows is a disaster. Thousands of people traipse through there every year, destroying any semblance of peace and quiet. Is it the horses or the decades of mouse droppings that make the cabins and restaurant smell so disgusting? The cabin stay may cost you a fortune, but you get hanta virus and e coli for free!

I feel safer and cleaner sleeping in a ragged tent near a flooding river than I do in one of their cabins. Rowdy drunk idiots are everywhere, and I don't mean just the owners. You are more likely to get killed by a drunk driver than a bear up there.

And the water, do not drink the water (unless you have a really good filter). It tastes like it came from the river and was filtered through horse manure before coming to the cabin. The restaurant might as well just give you the cans of food and let you warm them up yourself in your room. Perfect crap, but costs about as much as a gourmet restaurant, so they call it gourmet.

Do not, I repeat, do not eat any fish that you catch there (if you can push your way through the crowd to get to the river). They are bathed in a horrific yellow foam in the river, caused by years and years of Kennedy Meadows dumping all of their horse waste into the river.

If you value your time, your money, your sanity, and the environment, do not go anywhere near Kennedy Meadows.

We spent a week at Kennedy Meadows the first week of October, and it was one of the best vacations I have ever had. The cabins are rustic, but very clean and comfortable. The only heat is the wood stove and the power is off from around 11pm to 5am, but that only added to the charm of this place. And they are pet friendly!

Sitting by the fire every night relaxing with friends and using the lantern after the power went out was fun. Even though we were there for the first storm of the season and got about 3" of snow, we were still able to use the outdoor fire pit and BBQ at our cabin.

All of the staff were great, the food in the restaurant was AWESOME and the Saloon was fun! The store has good food and supplies at normal prices - they don't rip you off simply because you are in the middle of nowhere (so to speak), and you can run a tab!

We did lots of fishing right there in the meadow, the four of us catching our limit of Rainbow Trout one day. Took the 1/2 day horse back ride another day, what fun! Our guide was great, the horses are all well kept and in good health! The scenery on the ride was amazing, the next time we will definitely go for the all day ride!

Yes, this place is rustic and the cabins aren't fancy. If you want luxury, high end amenities and non-stop hand over foot service; this is not the place for you.

If you want to stay at a great historic resort in the middle of a beautiful Sierra meadow and relax, hike, fish, hunt, bird watch, ride horses, etc. all while not being interrupted by phones, TVs and the like and just enjoy the peace and quiet and nature around you; then this is the place for you! We booked our next one week stay the day we checked out!

I can't say enough good things about this place and I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the meadow or the river.
