Owner description: Black Chasm was named a National Natural Landmark in 1976 by the National Park Service for its outstanding displays of rare helictite formations. The 50-minute guided walking tour descends a series of stairs and walkways that loop around the formation covered caverns walls. Here, flowstones interspersed with stalactites, draperies and helictites compete for space above the stairways. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, nature hike, picnic tables. School program available. Open every day, year round.

“Cave of wonder”

Good tour. Well established with wide viewing areas. However they only have three chambers for viewing which was disappointing.

“Great tour and interesting formations”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

We visited in the summer and figured this would be a nice way to get out of the heat. With the temperature at a cool 58 degrees inside, it was very nice. The tour is just under an hour. You go down several steps to landing platforms in different rooms. The pace is nice, so you don't feel like it was a big workout. Some of the formations are very unique and beautiful. Overall, we felt it was worth the visit.

“Magnificent display of nature's geological wonders.”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

I enjoyed a wonderful outing at this attraction. The tour takes about 45 minutes and the guides are well informed as well as entertaining. After the tour, be sure to browse the rock shop which is pricey, but the quality if the minerals is excellent. Make sure to buy a bag of gravel and use the slew to rinse away the dirt and identify your new gems and rocks that were in the bag.

“Black Chasm Cavern Well worth the Time!”
Reviewed December 9, 2011

While traveling off of highway 49 I took a detour to the little town of Volcano and then a few miles further stopped at the Black Chasm Cavern to see what they had to offer. I found the kiosk to be manned by helpful staff and the decent into the chasm was well moderated by a very informed guide who spared no pains in decribing the history of the chasm as well as the geology and events that formed it. I would recommend this attraction for all. Cost is moderate and the time required to tour the site is around 45 minuets. Not recommended for those who have vertigo issues or claustraphobia! The cave contains several types of formations that are very rare in north America.
