“This is a hidden jewel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

I wrote this up in my review about The Madrones, but want to do it again here -so there is a direct link to the great chef running this small café, Patrick Meany. My husband and I stayed at The Madrones this past weekend and spent both nights exploring his small and finely honed menu. The first night we had his exquisite scallop with mushrooms, delicate and simple, the sauce bringing out the essence and best of all flavors, the buckwheat gnocci with spring vegetables, again what Patrick does with sauces and broths is the secret of the fabulous nature of his food. The chiccarones - mushroom, not pork rind! What an unexpected explosion of flavor. The second night we went straight forward pizza. As a rule I never order pizza anywhere - first because I prefer my home-made ones, also I'm always comparing them to the wood burning oven trucks found throughout France where they are the best in the world. Again, Patrick did not disappoint. Heavenly. And finally, the daily changing ice cream - one night "toast", the next night "green tomatoes". If you want a "tasting-menu" experience without the "fuss" this is your place. His lovely wife completes the picture, along with other equally experienced and enjoyable servers. Inside you can sit at the bar and watch him carefully prepare and plate the dishes, or sit outside on the lovely terrace next to the fountain. Either way you win. I hope he stays small and secret, but alas, this much talent doesn't stay quiet for long. Enjoy!

“Loved it all!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2014

The food here is excellent. The pizza's are perfectly cooked and interesting - we loved the Jeffer Pizza with turducken sausage and the Spud Belly Pizza with bacon, blue cheese and potatoes. The highlight of the evening were the mushroom 'chicharrones', we ordered a second bowl. Make sure to try many different things - you won't be disappointed. Try the tongue if they have it and the mushroom icecream (it tasted like maple syrup). We begged the Chef to come to our table and he did, we couldn't thank him enough for the excellent food and the memorable evening at Stone & Embers.

“Quintessential Wine Country Spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Have enjoyed both lunch on the patio and dinner inside at this lovely and delicious new find in Philo. A lot of people are saying the Anderson Valley is what Napa used to be and places like Stone and Embers, serving high quality, casually elegant, creative cuisine help to solidify the theory. This is more than a wood fired pizza place (the pizza is amazing) great care and style clearly go into all the dishes that come out of the kitchen. The menu is small and changes with what's current and available. If in the beautiful Anderson Valley don't miss this charming friendly dining experience.

“Excellent fresh and friendly!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

We found this restaurant by chance. It was suggested by a local wineryas it had only been open a few weeks. Pizzas are features and ours was excellent - light, tasty, and fitting the California wine country atmosphere. The other items we saw served looked delicious. We look forward to going back.
