From the coast on the 128 highway you drive through huge redwoods in Navarro state park that are captivating and to your right of the road there is a beautiful river that adds even more enjoyment to your road trip to wine country. My two favorites we stopped at are Hadley Winery which is beaurtiful and they are so knowledgeable about the wines and the area. We bought their whites, brut and Pino and are looking forward to sharing fond memories and sipping wine with our best friends. Husch was another place we bought wine and that was a different setting altogether. It was very rustic and intimate. We bought their chenin blanc and chardoney. They are two great places to visit if you enjoy white wine, We prefer white wine and this valley has it. We also toured Anderson Brewery that is at the other end of the wine trail. We were staying at Point Arena and took Mountain View Rd. to get back to Point Arena. It was raining and people at our resort warned us about driving it. There are no guard rails, shear cliffs and you are driving on a road that does not have a yellow line in it at some points. You can only go 35 miles an hour and there are several turns that are at 15 miles per hour. To save your nerves don't go on this road at night. Take the 128 back to the coast and relax!

Enjoyed taking this route to Mendocino. Very scenic and many wineries to choose from. We stopped at the Navarro Winery.

I enjoy this region as well as, if not better than the Napa Valley

We spent a summer weekend in scenic Anderson Valley with friends. Although a bit further from San Francisco than the popular Napa/Sonoma Valleys, Anderson Valley is very much worth the extra travel time. It lacks the tourist trap-eyness and crowds of Napa yet has wineries of equal caliber and quaint restaurants that serve excellent (and upscale) California cuisine. At the same time tastings at many of the wineries are free and the feel is much mellower - no elbowing your way to the tasting room here. The scenery is gorgeous and Elk Beach on the ocean a 45 minute, very scenic drive away. For those who prefer beer over wine, the Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Boonville has a tasting room and excellent beer. Napa has the advantage of being closer to San Francisco but given the extra time I would visit Anderson Valley over Napa any day.
