I was a little confused by this place. It apparently is a local institution of some reputation, dating back to 1894, which certainly qualifies it as something of a historical site. The atmosphere is nice--casual and tavern-like--but the menu and prices seem to be striving for something fitting a more upscale setting. This mismatch would be forgivable if the food were better, but our meal did not really measure up.

Read the menu carefully (I didn't) because it tells you the history of this quaint, ALWAYS BUSY SO PLAN TO WAIT, restaurant. I think it's the only restaurant in Pescadero but there are just about the exact number of quaint, cute shops, stores to enjoy before you are seated. It's not a great menu, but inexpensive and certainly good. I've been twice but can only tell you I had the fish and chips (red snapper, which was a treat from the traditional cod) and it was good. My husband, who remembers everything, can't recall what he had and it was just a few days ago!! Therefore, it was not bad and it was not memorable. He said they had excellent beer...THAT he remembers. I think they do have some very good signature dishes, but you don't really go there for the cuisine...it's the only place to eat, the staff is nice, and every table is full.

We have been here a couple of times. Once before DDD and once right after. The food was pretty good then.

Fast forward a couple of years. What happened? Food was bland and expensive.

The artichoke soup use to have flavor, now its nasty.
Crab sandwich doesn't come with anything on the side $15.
Snapper and Fries for $15. Little bits of fish dipped in corn meal. I don't even think it was fresh.
Rex sole dinner $20, small strip of fish with bones a portion of mash potatoes no gravy, etc. and broccoli.
Flounder sandwich $15, this was a JOKE. Piece of fish (not really seasoned) with shredded lettuce on a bun with fries. Seriously?

The Olallieberry pie was the highlight and it was just ok.

As for service the waitress came took the order and couldn't get away from our table fast enough. We had to call her back to get 2 out of 3 drink orders filled.

I'm giving 2 stars based on the fact that we have had a decent meal here in the past. Hopefully our last visit was just a fluke....

If you dont like waiting for a table, plan to eat off hours. Lines can be daunting. Food is OK. Nothing really special about the place but reputation. Good service. Guess it is one of those "places to be". Good deli down the street and a couple of nice stores in the area.

This is the main place to eat in Pescadero and everybody told us to go there. We (four) had two meals there when we recently stayed at a nearby Lodge. We unanimously found our meals very ordinary, though the ambiance is delightful and the service terrific.
