“Used to be great, now it is just mediocre”
Reviewed June 5, 2010

They used to put great care into their food and preparation. Now t,hey buy their sauces from the same restaurant supply company that supplies the Chinese restaurants in the area and so the foods all use those same Chinese restaurant canned sauces that taste the same in every restaurant of the type that you go to. You know the ones I am talking about.

Reviewed April 24, 2010

We ate here 3 times on our trip for both dinner and lunch. The food was consistently very good and reasonably priced.

“Great choice for an inexpensive dinner in Paso Robles.”
Reviewed April 5, 2010

We chose Basil Thai for our first dinner in Paso based on the Trip Advisor reviews and the fact that, since we did not know when we would be arriving in town, we needed a place we could drop in without a reservation. Even at a relatively late hour on Friday (~ 8:30 P.M.), the restaurant (including the bar seating) was packed. Because the restaurant fronts the park, I'm sure they get lots of walk-in traffic. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait more than 10-15 minutes and the staff kept us up to date on when a table would be ready.

Basil Thai has a unique, modern interior instead of the standard generic Asian restaurant decor. It seemed like a place with buzz instead of a quiet place to get Thai food.

The drink list featured local beers and wines. The menu was pretty extensive - there's definitely something for everyone here. And the quality of the food was excellent. I got tofu & spinach with the famous "cashew" sauce. The sauce was definitely good, but it's such a strong flavor that it probably would have been better as a shared dish. The prices are very reasonable - the total bill for two people including drinks, tax, and tip was only around $35.

My only quibble was that the service wasn't terrific. Our server just wasn't that engaging and seemed uninterested in answering our questions about the menu. Also, I wasn't asked if I wanted a second drink until the meal was over. I'd be willing to chalk that up to it being the end of a busy weekend night, however, and it wouldn't deter me from coming back.

“Top Notch Thai Food!”
Reviewed February 17, 2010

We live locally and have eaten Thai Food in many other locales. We love this place and try to taste different menu items each time, but the staple of our dinner is always the Thom Ka Kai soup. It is awesome and they were kind enough to give us the recipe on one of our many visits although we haven't tried to make it yet. The only negative we have is that their red wines are served a little too warm for our tastes.
