Honestly, this place was nothing special. Priced really high for what you get. Service was average at best. All the food was eatable but nothing that blew my taste buds away. Service was ok but appeared distracted. Place only have people at four tables when we arrived at 7:30pm. Granted the state fair was in town but seemed really dead. If back in town we will pass on this place and try somewhere else. Do not believe it deserves the ranking it has on Trip Advisor unless every where else is worst.

I have been a fan of Buona Tavola since they first opened their San Luis Obispo location, and then at their second location in Paso Robles, just a block and a half from the City Park. Owner, Chef, Antonio Varia, is an animated, amiable and talented chef. The dishes are delicious, always skillfully prepared. The carciofi ai petali di parmigiano is a delectable fresh salad of diced artichoke, Roma tomatoes with shaved Parmesan in a balsamic vinaigrette. After returning from Italy’s lake region, we had the porcini mushroom risotto at Buona Tavola. I told Antonio that it tasted exactly like the mushroom risotto I’d eaten in Italy; he said that was the same area where he was raised. Although he focuses mostly on Northern Italian cuisine, he does some wonderful Southern Italian dishes, such as the Fetuccine al sugo di carni miste, pasta in a braised chicken, duck, veal, and beef in herbed meat sauce. An Italian friend said it was great, reminiscent of that cooked by his mother. Being a seafood lover, I enjoy the linguine ai frutti de mare, which has manila clams and mussels in a lightly-spiced light tomato broth. Buona Tavola’s special pasta of the day is a good choice. The restaurant has a large selection of grappa; trying it once in Bassano del Grappo Italy was enough for me. They have a full bar, tasty homemade limoncello, and a good selection of local and Italian wines. Wait staff are professional and attentive. Besides the casually elegant indoor seating, there is seating also available at the bar or on the small patio. Since the restaurant is on Spring Street, the patio seating can be noisy as it sees a significant amount of traffic.

Started w/soup, and artichoke heart and tomato salad. Soup was tomato & potato based-not at all acidic. Salad could have had fresher tasting tomatoes, given the season. Each of us had a pasta or a risotto, all excellent. Tira Misu for desert, very nice. The wine was a Paso Tablas-still raving.

This restaurant could be over the top if the kitchen paid slightly more attention to detail: produce selection, seasonings & desert freshness/temperature. They have another restaurant in SLO, so it may be a management issue. Their wine list at the lower to medium end is very respectable (particularly the varietals), for the local wines. Stay within that comfort zone and you won't go wrong.

Good quality offerings, tasty fresh pasta and well prepared veal. Only issue was that they indicated it was half off any bottle of wine. That is until we ordered the best bottle on the list then after several minutes when the server returned, it became , "oh, well, ummmm, that only applies to bottles under $100". To be totally fair, I went back to their website and it does say, ..."under $100". Unfortunately we were not looking at the web site and teh server kinda messed up.
All said, a good place for a nice upscale Itailan meal.

On a recent trip through Paso Robles, we selected this restaurant based on reviews found on the internet. In spite of a misunderstanding on our order, (which was quickly corrected) we found the service efficient and friendly. The grilled chicken breast with the mustard rosemary sauce was very well received. Also very good was the tortelloni stuffed with veal, spinach and prosciutto in a porcini tomato sauce. The wine list was excellent with reasonable price range and a wide variety of local, California and Italian wines. Give this restaurant a try. Although not full on a Thursday night, I would think a reservation would be the safer way to go. The only outdoor seating I noticed was a bit too close to the street.
