“French Find in Paso Robles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014

I had read a few negative reviews here so was concerned but shouldn't have been. This meal was top notch from the service to the wines, to the food. Ian the Maitre de got us right in seated us then told us about the tasting menu which we went for. 5 courses served elegantly with correct service. Wines that matched the foods very well and good pours. Food was outstanding and I don't think I could say more than bravo! I would recommend this restaurant that appreciates good food and service.

“Bistro, not Michelin Star”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2014

Credit to Laurent for starting and sustaining the real restaurant culture of Paso Robles so many years ago. We have dined here occasionally since it was opened (and actually enjoyed his food when he was cooking at Justin before that). He is a true treasure for the community. However our most visit felt a lot different and definitely tended toward the "get the tourist dollar" trap. The food was carefully prepared and occasionally very good but the pretense that this is a Michelin star facility is not supported by the predictable recipes. The crab and lobster were recently caught and delicate but the asparagus, while clearly local and fresh was slightly overcooked. Lentils with grilled salmon was not a good idea but they worked well with the frog legs. The wine tasting menu was disappointing as well. The choices offered were adequate but not creative and exciting and some were way off--an odd local grenache with the duck, an ordinary La Vieille Ferme rouge. Parsimonious pours were offered. A request for more bread seem to offend the server. Most problematic, however, was the clear difference in treatment that "locals" received. Course wines were left on the table to pour, they were offered house water rather only bottled, etc. The host spent time with them and giving information. Obviously the wine industry has adopted this place and is known to the staff and should be comfortable but we left feeling somewhat exploited and processed rather than being a welcomed guest. I hesitate to return.

“Magnifique!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2014 via mobile

This was our third time for dinner at the Bistro. We were warmly greeted by Ian and seated at our table for eight. The atmosphere was definitely Parisian, with posters and wallpaper that surrounded me with authentic bistro feel.

I simply told Ian that we all like red wines of the area and would like to start with a Champagne. He did the rest. Dinner was to be a surprise with foods paired to the wines he selected.

Well, long story short, at the end of our 2 1/2 soirée, we had an absolutely wonderful meal paired with great local wines. Everyone had a wonderful time and the food was excellent. One of our party was French from Normandy and spent time with Chef Laurent in the kitchen. They really hit it off. It turns out that Laurent is also from Normandy.

Great restaurant, a little noisy, beautiful atmosphere, great service and wonderful wines. Thanks Ian and Chef Laurent!

“Paris in Paso”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

Eating here is like taking a mini excursion to France, but without the attitude. It is elegant without being stuffy. This is the place we take people who still think we live in the sticks.

“Fabulous!”

This is our favorite special restaurant in the Central Coast. Delicious food, lovely service and beautiful ambiance all make for a special evening. The wine list is also a real treat.
