We first visited Bistro Laurent several years ago and enjoyed it very much. We returned this week for a very special evening. Following the recommendation of the Maitre d', we chose to have the chef surprise us with a five-course meal -- every bite of the surprise was a delight which was expertly complemented with outstanding wine pairings. We started with the amuse -- a smoked salmon crudo on brioche. The first course was lobster salad with orange sauce paired with Clavo Albarino. The second was a duck confit crispy tart paired with Adelaida Pinot Noir. The third course was Alaskan halibut on a bed of lentils paired with Les Dentelles Cotes du Rhone. Grilled lamb sirloin with mashed potatoes followed paired with the Clavo Syrah. Dessert was sugar crepes with berries and berry coulis paired with Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. Amazing food with fantastic wines at an unbelievable price. This was one of the top five best meals of the year for us -- a treat we'd be happy to repeat any time.

Very good French style food. Why in Paso Robles? Because that is what the two gentlemen behind the stoves want. Service impeccable.
Matire de is an excellent wine advisor.

This past Saturday evening, I had the pleasure of dining at Bistro Laurent for a wine and meal pairing with Clos Solene winery. The wine makers Solene and Guillaume Fabre poured some of their outstanding wines: the 2008 Roussanne, 2009 Homage, 2012 Hommage Blanc and their sublime Sweet Clementine. Bistro Laurent served a fantastic menu including sea scallops, seafood fricassee, braised veal cheeks and sugar crepes. Although this menu was part of a pre-reserved event, I am certainly going to return to this lovely intimate, little restaurant. And Clos Solene deserves many kudos for their outstanding vintages.

You can order off the menu or pick four or five course tasting menus with a very reasonably priced wine pairing option and you also can let the chef whip up whatever he wants to surprise you. They also start you off with an amuse bouche and two kinds of warm bread and creamy butter. My courses were a house smoked salmon salad with crispy beets, tiny cheese raviolis with chanterelles, Halibut in a red wine sauce and a baked apple with fresh ice cream. Everything I had was delicious and I'd gladly go back again. Service was very professional.

Our lunch at Bistro Laurent was nice, but service was a bit lackluster. The wines we chose were good. My husband and I shared the goat-cheese and sausage pizza, which was delicious. I had the Bistro salad with roast chicken and found it very ample and filling; it's a little like a Caesar salad but less tangy. My husband's croque monsieur was a disappointment: it was not batter-dipped, it was dry and had very little ham.

We found the prices and ratings oddly high.
