We had a wonderful experience at Grapestake Cottage - so comfortable with incredible ambience, very cozy. A great getaway for a relaxing time in the wine country - so peaceful and serene. Close to fine restaurants downtown Paso Robles; although you might want to stay home and cook in the gourmet kitchen. Cambria and Hearst Castle are a short drive. Our hosts, Nancy and Owen, were warm and welcoming. We could not have asked for more. Look forward to our next visit.

I agree with everything the first two reviews mentioned. All aspects of the experience were luxurious and top quality. The hosts were engaging, knowledgeable and gracious.
The little details were impressive. I loved the heavy, solid wood doors and the hardware on them, all coordinated with the rest of the tasteful decor. I think this is what ambience is all about - everything blending together harmoniously and giving you a real feel for a place.
This is a storybook setting if your stories include wine (and some of ours do). For us, it was a getaway of extraordinary quality. We enjoyed unwinding and experiencing a wine region that has come of age.
What really got to me was the view out the living room and bedroom windows. The cottage is on a hill and overlooks a panorama of vineyards. First, there are flowers directly in front of the windows, then horizontal rows of vines. You see that you are in the middle of a vineyard. But beyond those vines are rolling vineyards, with their rows of vines at different angles. Beyond them are the mountains. It is a painting come alive.
But best of all, ithe view changes as the sun moves. The birds started chirping outside our open bedroom window with sunrise. Coming from behind us, the sun made those beautiful mountains and vineyards glow in sequence. Sunset, with the western sky in its colors, was also spectacular.
We will be back.
My husband and I stayed here for four nights on a recent vacation to California (March 2018) because we had heard a lot about the Paso Robles wine region and wanted to check it out for ourselves. We had been to Napa and Sonoma before and had heard good things about Paso wines. We were not disappointed! During our trip we were able to visit a number of wineries and were surprised that some of them rival the high-end wineries in Napa, but we found them to be less pretentious (and cheaper!). If you are a wine lover, you need to check out Paso! But the highlight of the trip was definitely staying at the Grapestake Cottage. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we experienced one pleasant surprise after another. First, you will be staying in a stand-alone cottage or villa situated right on the edge of a vineyard that is not otherwise open to the public. That was pleasant surprise Number One. Number Two was that the photos do not do the cottage justice: when was the last time you stayed somewhere that was BETTER than advertised? The cottage is peaceful and private, so you feel like you have the vineyard to yourself, which is one of the best parts of the experience. Inside, it is five star all the way and no expense was spared: there is a full kitchen with high-end appliances, a beautiful fireplace that we cranked up at night, and a very comfortable bed and linens. Everything is top-shelf and immaculate. For us, it was much better than staying in a B&B because there were no other guests, and so you felt like you had your own luxury cottage to yourself. There were also numerous little touches that made us glad we hadn’t opted to stay in a hotel: there was for instance a surprisingly generous basket of complimentary snacks, including locally produced beef jerky (my favorite), a wide assortment of Keurig coffees, teas, and hot chocolates, and, of course, a welcome bottle of wine. The décor is also something you will not find in a regular hotel or B&B: the walls are covered with authentic vintage wine and spirit posters, the shower is full travertine, the front door is about nine feet high, and there are countless touches such as a vintage piano that had been converted into a buffet. These are the sorts of features that remind you that you’re staying in a one-of-kind boutique property. All in all, this was a fabulous experience. We can’t recommend the Grapestake Cottage highly enough: if there are nights available, book it!
Now that it is listed on Trip Advisor, I am happy to review the Grapestake Cottage in hopes that others will have the pleasure of enjoying the hospitality of owners Nancy and Owen. The entire property is gorgeous and private…beautiful flowers and olive trees on top of being surrounded by vineyards. Awesome. The cottage itself is new and beautifully decorated with great art. The compact kitchen has everything, even an ice maker. Trader Joe’s isn’t far away. Good internet and television. Being growers, Owen and Nancy were able to help us plan our route to go wine tasting. The cottage location is super convenient….about a mile from the 101 freeway as well as being “the gateway” to the famed west side Paso wine county. We had a wonderful time and hope to go back!
