Pulling up to this beautiful property was both elegant and inviting. The hotel has a charm and beauty that has you believing that you have entered into another world, for the price of something much more pedestrian. The food and drink is pricey, but the surroundings are right out of another era.

We needed to go to Claremont, CA,USA for my daughters graduation. Claremont is a small quaint village town with no deluxe properties available. The best hotel is a 3 starer. Anyways we didnt have a choice of that also as they were all sold out for graduation week. Our only option was to either stay in LA and commute for over an hour to college or stay in a nearby town. I googled for 5 star properties around Claremont and very surprisingly Langham turned up. It seemed like a lovely hotel set across 23 acres. We got ourselves a 2 bedroom cottage. It was an absolute delight to stay in. Spacious, well lit and very airy. Very good food, great service and only half an hour from Claremont.

Room Tip: Shamrock Cottage is an ideal 2 bedroom 2 and half bathroom unit for a family of 4-6 people.

My experience at this hotel was perplexing. On the one hand, the grounds, pool and gardens are very nice. Of course, for Pasadena, a city rife with a homeless problem in its public parks, this place is exceptional but not so for a five-star. Most pubic parks in Paris or Vienna put this hotel's grounds to shame. So much for world-class. What really stands out is the dysfunctional management. It seems the old staff - very competent and welcoming - is not appreciated by the new Langham employees, some of which are inattentive, cheap, arrogant, short-sighted, rude and low-class, who tend to attract similar guests. This is not just a Southern California landmark. It is also - still, at the terrace restaurant and pool - carrying the spirit if not the flesh of Southern California hospitality. I hope a local wealthy person buys it back and sends this incompetent Langham whatchamacallit company back to where it came from. Their style and attitude has little if nothing to do with this historical hotel.

We arrived late (after 8 PM) due to a busy day, but the desk clerk said he could upgrade us to the club level, which are the rooms on the top two floors of the hotel (7th and 8th floors) The room was good sized and had nice furniture and bathroom. For breaklast, we went to the cloub lounge, which was fantastic. They call it a continental breakfast, but it is far more than that. There were warm cheese blitzes with jam and real whipped cream, eggs Benedict, and lox and bagels amoung the food choices, in addition to an assortment of pastries. An attendant (one of three on duty) gets you your choice of a coffee based beverage from a machine like the ones used in a coffee shop. There is also fresh orange juice and other beverages. Everyone on the staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful, spacious, and have a lot of walking paths. If you are looking to stay in the Los Angeles area and get away from the very urban setting of most of the accomadations there, this hotel is an outstanding choice.

Room Tip: Paying extra for the premium level rooms is welll worth the money.

I had read the previous review to see if this was still a 5 star property and they had stated it was. Actually I would barely give it 3.5 starts. This was once such a beautiful property when owned by the Ritz Carlton. It best days have unfortunately past and it is quite apparent in the property itself and the service. The carpets, furniture, and flooring were quite worn and even stained. Attention to detail is definitely lacking. We had stayed the previous night at a lower end Hilton property and it was cleaner and nicer. The pool area is still quite lovely, but mirrors with hand prints and litter on the lobby floor affected the ambiance of the property. The bed linens were lovely and the bed quite comfortable, however the pillows were not. The spa was actually in better shape than the hotel. The spa staff were attentive and friendly. It is disappointing that the Langham group has not invested in the upkeep of these once beautiful grounds, where litter, and cigarette butts ruined the ambiance of the once breathtaking gardens. We were looking forward to a few days respite at a once gorgeous Pasadena property that we had fond memories of and sadly it was quite disappointing!

Room Tip: I will say the location of our room was nice near the pool, but not too close. We were on the ground floor with a lovely patio that was bordered by a nice lawn.
