Cardinal Hotel
Ranked #13 of 27 Hotels in Palo Alto

The Cardinal Hotel is my go-to place when visiting our college kids at Stanford. Rooms are perfectly comfortable, in-room bathrooms recently & nicely renovated with Tarocco amenities. Large lobby with fireplace, coffee/tea station, & round-the-clock security. Location can't be beat: short walk to transport shuttles & to local restaurants avoids need for a rental car. Best breakfast place--Coupa cafe--literally steps from the hotel. Drawbacks: no AC in summer months, corner location can be noisy, lobby staff but mostly but not uniformly courteous and helpful, on-street parking only. Bonuses: Stanford discount available, making this a good value; washer/dryer on guest floors if you want to do your student's laundry! Greatly preferable the chain hotels along Camino Real.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with in-house bath; otherwise, could be one down the hall.

I know it is an old historic building and it does have it's charm. It is also a very convenient location within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. However, there were several things that I didn't like. First, I found the staff very unfriendly. That is the least bad thing to say. It is also very noisy. The windows are old and I could hear everything that happened in the street below me, all through the night. What made it worse is that there is NO AIR CONDITIONING and the window needed to be open to keep things cool, which made the noise even louder. At night, I was uncomfortable leaving the window open, as there was a climbable tree outside my window. The room was comfortable enough and the bathroom was renovated and nice. There are rooms though that you have to share community showers, so make sure you know what you book. The final thing that I had concerns about though is security. The locks are old fashioned key locks that you have to lock when you leave. Contrary to most hotel practices, the hotel room number is attached to the key, so if you lose your key....you know the rest. Also, I was appalled when I called the front desk (not from my room no less) to leave a message for my colleague and they freely gave me his room number. (I didn't even ask for it.) That is a huge no no. The price is very affordable, but just be aware of some of the things you are NOT getting with it.

Room Tip: Make sure it has a shower and not on the main street

very clean & very well maintained and refurbished; would definitely recommend to others; housekeeping & front desk staff very courteous, friendly & accommodating (with one exception) Overall, I loved the style and cleanliness of the hotel and its location downtown. The Tarocco soap/bath products are an extra nice touch!

Room Tip: You ARE staying downtown, so there will be a little noise. Rooms facing the alley will get some noi...

The stay was quite positive. Great downtown location, very clean environment, and reasonable price. They also provided tea, coffee, hot water for free! In addition, there were many kinds of maps in the lobby so no need to worry how to get to your destination. Staff were polite and nice, very patient to answer questions. I will choose the same hotel when next time I visit Palo Alto!

Room Tip: no special tip

If you are charmed by old style (as I am) this is a very cool hotel, since it also has modern amenities like an updated bathroom, new carpet, direct USB charging plugs, flat screen tv, and free wifi. It's a great balance, in my mind, of keeping some old touches without feeling outdated at all. Clearly all the decisions about what to keep have been thoughtfully made (lobby with fireplace, hefty door frames, smallish rooms).

I agree the noise is quite loud, both within the hotel and from the street. I don't suggest staying here if you are a light sleeper. I do suggest it if you like places that have some style and "feel".

Centre of town ye olde world charm.
Comfortable, friendly and down to earth. Only minus was the noise from rowdy students (I guess) at closing time in the nearby bars - nothing I haven't heard from staying in UK and not the problem of hotel. Walking distance to cal train station and in centre of town, positives far out weigh negatives. Shared bathrooms, old elevators and no frills add to the charm and character of the place - I will stay here again.

The Cardinal hotel is in great position, in easy walking distance of the lovely Palo Alto and restaurants. The hotel is functional, comfortable and clean...its just a bit dreary and old. The bedding could certainly do with being freshened up. The staff barely acknowledge you as you walk in and out and would be nicer if they could rustle up a smile or "good morning" every now and again.
