Description: Dear Sam's fan's, Sam's Palo Alto has been SOLD to a new restaurant. Our last day of operation was Sunday, December 11, 2016. Our expansion business model has changed to focus on smaller, fast casual "cafes" which are easier to staff and operate, so this opportunity came at a good time for us. In addition to our popular and continually growing Half Moon Bay "mother ship" location, we will be announcing some new, smaller café locations in the coming year. We appreciate everyone who voted us "BEST NEW RESTAURANT" and "BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN PALO ALTO" two years in a row, and we've enjoyed serving you delicious seafood. It's been fun to be in Palo Alto the past several years, and we are grateful for the warm and wonderful reception that we've received from the community. THANK YOU to our staff for working hard to deliver great food and service - we are happy that many of them are joining us at our Half Moon Bay location, or staying on at the same location with the new owners. THANK YOU also to our farmers, fishermen and purveyors, for all the wonderful ingredients you have provided to us. We hope to see you at our Half Moon Bay Sam's Chowder House location, or at one of our Sam's Chowdermobile trucks. Or maybe we'll see you at one of our future new locations (stay tuned!). Meanwhile...thank you for all of your support - we truly appreciate it! The Sam's Team

Go Warriors to The NBA Finals.
There is a great TV coverage behind Sam's bar which is straight off the lobby/foy yea.
The wine list is limited, but one can fine one wine to drink that you will enjoy. If not, ask Manager Megan to waive their customary corkage fee.

Sam the Bartender is very knowledgable and accommodating.
Do offer him a drink. This polite gesture is legal in some parts along the Pacific Ocean coast.

Nonetheless, order the fish soup (called Chi-Op-Pinot) with the lobster-clam-sausage combination. Let Sam taste it before you eat it all. Make sure he or she does not die, first.

Enjoy the ocean views from Palo Alto, too.

I have been going to the Sam Chowder House in Half Moon Bay for years. It's always good. I expected the same in Palo Alto, but it isn't even close. The clam chowder is thick like paste and the lobster roll is about 1/2 the lobster they give in Half Moon Bay. I live in Palo Alto, but I would rather drive to Half Moon Bay. It's as if they are two different restaurant.

The chowder is very good, with a little different flair. Maybe that's what made it so good. Well worth the trip for the chowder. The seafood salad ($16) was very simple, bland and too expensive for some lettuce and small bits of seafood. The shrimp were flavorless, but the tuna fish, calamari and bay scallops were nicely flavored. Po Boys were expensive and uninspiring. Go for the chowder, it is excellent. Service is quite good as well.

Our service experience was top of the tops. Our grilled Lobster was heavenly. The appetizers were great. The drinks hit the spot. We will be back in the neighborhood come Oct. 2014 and though there are many restaurants to choose from in this quaint and beautiful area it's Sam's we will be back to. Thanks Sam's!!

Don't bother. With all the great restaurants in Palo Alto and up and down the Peninsula, there is no reason to eat here. I ordered two vegetable sides - roast squash and brussel sprouts - to accompany my bowl of bean and kale soup. The soup was OK, but the sides were heavy and oily. The only "plus" is that they were very large for sides. But when they aren't very good, it isn't much of a plus.

Wines by the glass are in the $12 - $14+ range, which seemed high.

Also, there were several families dining with very small and noisy children, and tables are close, close, close.

I like Sam's oceanside restaurant but will not be returning to this one.
