First the positives: Although the hotel is situated between a busy highway on one side and railroad tracks on the other, it's intelligent site-design assures that most rooms are unaffected by the noise from either. Second, the bathrooms (or at least the one in the room I had) was large and sumptuous. Third, the front desk staff were pleasant and efficient.

But also the negatives: The room décor was drab and dated, and the large chair was uncomfortable. The room smelled faintly of tobacco smoke, even though this is theoretically an entirely non-smoking hotel. The telephones didn't work, at least for the purpose of calling the front desk. The buffet breakfast - at $19 plus tax and tip - looked barely adequate, and certainly not worth the price. Additionally, there are some unusual extra charges. For a luxury hotel, charging anything for Wi-Fi/Ethernet is a stretch, but here the price is $10 per day. There is also a $14 per day charge for self-parking - even though this is a suburban hotel. (Apparently, the front desk has broad discretion to waive both of these charges.)

Finally, there wasthe matter of obtaining driving directions. Neither MapQuest nor Google were helpful if one as driving south on El Camino, so I called the hotel directly. The first person I spoke to gave me directions that I knew were impossible, as they involved a left turn onto a street where none was allowed. The second person gave me better guidance (make a signal- permitted U-turn, beyond the hotel.) But even those directions weren't quite right, as that same kind of traffic-signaled U-Turn could have been made about a mile sooner.

Room Tip: Make sure to request a room that does not face directly onto El Camino Real, an extremely busy highw...

Have stayed a couple of times in the past six months and really love its low-slung quietness and respite from the mental frenzy that accompanies visits to Palo Alto. The walking distance to the train station, two sets of shopping/restaurant row choices also within comfortable walking distance, friendly service and very comfortable, large rooms/bathrooms make it quite a good resting place even if its "plainness" can leave wrong initial impressions. A very attentive breakfast restaurant staff and choices, good Starbucks coffee in room and lobby. Can get expensive (in the $400+ range sometimes) and depending on where your room is, a bit of a deceptive walk through endless corridors.

I have stayed at this hotel numerous times in the past few years - sometimes with my whole family (kids included), sometimes with just my husband, and sometimes alone. Never does it fail to meet and even exceed my expectations. The staff is so courteous and helpful - somehow it always seems to surprise me even though I've come to expect no less from them. The hotel is well-planned, well-laid out, clean, and quiet. Breakfast is delicious and the wait staff is responsive and polite.

Room Tip: I prefer not to stay on the first floor. Every room I've stayed in has a view of a private, plea...

The hotel is within walking distance to downtown Palo Alto. The parking charges will add up quickly and are expensive. My first impression was how 'vanilla' everything in the hotel looked. There's no personality from the lobby to the room. The bed was comfortable, room fairly quite, and there were adequate amenities. But everything was just OK. If I couldn't find anything else and I had to stay near downtown Palo Alto this place would do. But next time I'll look elsewhere.

Dear S H,
Thank you for staying with us and for your feedback. I am sorry that we did not live up to expectations and hope that you will give us another try should you return to Palo Alto for an overnight stay. We are in the process of renovating our guest rooms and expect to do the same to our lobby within six months, perhaps the new décor will be more to your liking.
Best Regards,

We stayed for one weekend night and extended a second night simply because the hotel is perfect. The staff was very courteous and the facilities clean. The pool and jacuzzi temperature and areas are inviting; specially during sunset. Parking is conveniently located under the hotel which is nice if it is raining or you own a convertible. There are plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. This Starwood hotel encapsulates the "heavenly" concept of their chain entirely.

Well located near the University Ave. that has almost everything you need - restaurants, wallgreens, CVS, apple store, gamestop, and a lot of other commerce. Great staff and great rooms. They charge you 9.90 per day for internet usage.

This property is located in a great location. The grounds are nice and the hotel is well maintained. The 5th level suite has a nice wrap around balcony with nice furniture. This property features several courtyards that are a very nice place to relax.

Room Tip: Any room overlooking a courtyard.
