“Wonderfully relaxing, romantic getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2005

My girlfriend and I just finished a wonderful weekend getaway staying at the Viceroy in downtown Palm Springs. Both of us likened it to the garden of Eden. The grounds are beautiful, with hedges and fruit trees surrounding the three separate pools and two jacuzzis. Most of the time we had an entire pool to ourselves. One morning, I picked a fresh grapefruit off one of the trees and ate it poolside. If you get the deluxe room instead of the smaller ones, they are plenty large enough and the bed is sooo comfortable you almost don't want to get out of bed. The hotel is also walking distance from downtown and some great restaurants (the Citron restaurant at the Viceroy is supposed to be great, but we didn't try it). I highly recommend this place to any romantic weekend seekers!

Its clear that those who have a bad experience will find any little thing to pick on. This place was great for a weekend getaway. It had all the ammeneties of a larger traditional chain but the comfort exclusivity of a smaller inn. The staff was friendly, the check in, a breeze. The rooms were small but clean and tidy (no smell) with the only caveat being the bathrooms are smaller than they should be and lack counter space. The package booked was ready and waiting for us in the room when we arrived. The drinks were great, the pool was well stocked and the breakfast was Amazing! The bed was heavenly and the room stayed cool despite the heat outside (and in!) This place is what it is = romantic, secluded and cozy. Its a perfect weekend getaway, and we'd go back in a heartbeat.

I booked a 2 night stay for my Dad's 75th birthday. They never got the reservation from Travelocity so I had to re-book the reservation and pay again by credit card. When my dad checked out they tried to charge him for the room as well. I paid for a $350 gift certificate for my folks for massages and the hotel charged my credit card twice for that. It took over a week to get them to remove the extra charge. Nice hotel but incompetent staff.

Back in 1967, the Howard Manor had gone down the tubes, and we were looking for a new place to stay in our yearly trips to Palm Springs. We found the Estrella Villa and immediately fell in love. It had old word Palm Springs charm, a marvelous view of the mountains, and was close to our favorite hiking spot, Taquitz Canyon.

The Estrella was truly historic Palm Springs. Notable celebrities stayed there, like General George S. Patton, Clark Gable & Carol Lombard, Tracy & Hepburn. The list goes on. With its pristine 1920’s Mediterranean bungalows and sparkling pool, a place you never wanted to leave, or change. The Estrella grew over the years, but never lost sight of its origins, and kept the old world charm so many loved.

But around 2002 that all changed. A new owner had bought the place, and changed the name to The Viceroy. Things began to take a turn for the worse. Outlandish mixes of Greek and Art Deco decorations, trying to capture 1920’s Hollywood assaulted the eyes. Beautiful 60 year old Satillo tile floors were painted over in gloss white. Curtains and fabric (again in stark white) hung everywhere, even in the pool areas. Cheesy plaster greyhounds and other out of place art-deco & Greek decorations dotted the once immaculate grounds. Spanish fountains were ripped out, replaced with modernistic junk, classic furniture gone, etc. Picture if you will Rudolph Valentino on LSD. Truly bizarre.

But the last straw was the rather condescending attitude the new owner and his girlfriend (who decorated the place) had to families who wanted to stay at the Viscount. Too bad. We had a lot of fun at the old Estrella over the last 30 years. Guess it’s just another memory (we stay at the Orchid Tree Inn now).

From the pictures online--this place looks great. Very cool, contemporary--modern. We selected a premier King room on the second floor with a balcony...but upon arrival were first given a dark standard King room on the lower level. Of course, after we complained, they gave us the room we had paid for. The valet service ($18 pr/day) was not necessary as free parking is provided by the hotel along the side of the road--however if you don't valet park your car--they don't help you with your bags. We had to drag our bags around until we got to our desired room.
The room was visually stunning--great interior decor. The bed wonderful...the bathroom fine. We had a great view of the pool.
The hotel is for the most part a series of stucco boxes brought to life with a stunning paint job, great fixtures and fabulous carpets. The interior designer really did a lot to bring these very limited (if not cheap) set of buildings to life.
The staff (although very young) were very helpful when approached, but this is no Mandarin Oriental--expect to hunt down a waiter now and again for pool side service.
The restaurant was very beautiful, the bar quite stylish. The food is OK by LA/SF standards, but we could hardly eat our entries. As it was a special occasion for us, chocolate dipped strawberries were delivered free of charge to our room--how can one complain!! But then again, who likes to chase an enormous cockroach around the bathroom and stomp it with your shoe while on a spa resort weekend. I suspect the roaches are common for Palm Springs--we saw a huge one on the side of a wall next to the pool. Too jaded at this point to be phased, our swim late at night proved to be a blast. We did enjoy our stay, but I doubt will return. Best of luck with your Palm Spring hotel options. Cheers!
