Desert Riviera Hotel
Ranked #1 of 74 Hotels in Palm Springs
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 15, 2008

The Desert Riviera is a revelation. My husband and I have stayed in hotels from modest to luxury, and we've never had service like that anywhere. Larry took a small hotel that was caving in on itself, and inside of three months he turned it into the most charming, comfortable property I can imagine. He and his sister Judy and wife Patty create an atmosphere so welcoming and laid-back, it redefines what it is to be a "guest" at a hotel.

When the white stretch limo swung to the curb at the airport with Larry behind the wheel, we were a little mystified. All this fuss? Over us? But, when we arrived at the hotel, and Judy placed a cold beer in my husband's hand and a tall glass of water in mine, and Larry ushered us to our spotless, spacious, adorably decorated room, I thought, "I could get used to this."

The pool, a perfect ingot of turquoise, is surrounded by mesh-seated lounge chairs and umbrellas that tilt, whirl and bob to keep you in exactly the amount of sun (or in the case of this pasty San Franciscan, shade) you desire. Misters create a cool oasis along one side, while hard-core heat-seekers find their Mecca on the other. Cafe tables offer a spot for morning coffee, lunch, or evening cocktails, and a grill, hot tub and fire pit beckon at the dinner hour and beyond.

Larry has mastered the art of conviviality. He introduces new guests to earlier arrivals, remembering each person's name without fail. The effect is to break the ice before it even fully forms, so folks end up chatting around the pool or fire pit with ease, yet no one feels obligated to socialize.

And, despite the proximity of our room to the pool, not once were we disturbed by noise while trying to sleep (or even during mid-day naps).

Unlike many hotels we looked at in Palm Springs, the Desert Riviera is not trying to be hip or retro (though the decor does nod to its fabulous fifties origins). It's not trying to give its guests an education about architecture or design. It's simply trying to be a terrific place to relax, recharge and reconnect with the things that make life good. And in that mission, it succeeds brilliantly.

I just returned from a long weekend girls trip to Palm Springs. We actually found it here on Trip Advisor. Larry and Judy here at the Desert Riviera really know how to make you feel special, and comfortable! This is really just the best resort that is sure not to generate any complaints!

Every year since I graduated college some girlfriends and I like to go away once a year. We do not all live in the same place, so we like to get together and catch up. Our past few trips have been to Vegas. This year however, we were looking for a place to relax, have fun, and not need another vacation from when we returned home. And did we find the perfect place.

We started our weekend by getting picked up by Larry in the white limo. When we arrived, Judy handed us some bottles of water and got us checked in. We stayed in room #10, which is the double queen room. We also had a sitting area in front of the window that overlooked the pool deck, a large bathroom, walkin closet, and a kitchenette complete with mini fridge, sink, coffee maker, microwave, blender, toaster, and another table with chairs! It was huge. There were plenty of dishes, cups, silverware, so you would not need to bring a thing. There was a 37" LCD tv in the room, with a built in DVD player. Didn't think to bring a movie, dont worry, they have a DVD collection at the resort. Free to borrow and watch any movie. There were also board games to use as well. Outside were a collection of bikes, including a bike for 2 to ride as you like. There were locks on them, so if you took it into town, you could lock it up. Another Free perk of the resort.

There is also a larger grill on the pool deck. We were informed that if we wanted to us it, just say the word, and they would get you a grilling kit complete with all the flippers, meat rubs, condiments, ect. that you would need. So you would only need to go buy meat and bread. Another free courtesy of the resort.

We did not get a chance to plan any of our activites ahead of time, even though while booking Judy offered numerous times to help set up anything we wanted to do. Sat. morning we decided we wanted to go get a massage. Judy was quick to offer several locations. We also set up with her where we wanted to eat dinner that night, and the next. She also brought up a place to go and do wine tasting. Judy went onto the "Wild on the Vine" website, and even printed us off coupons! When we returned from our massages she confirmed our dinner reservation, and checked with us as to what time we wanted to be dropped off for wine tasting /dinner. The Wild on the Vine wine shop Judy reccommended was fabulous. It is run by a couple, and they were extremely nice and had some very tasty wine. We then headed to Matchbox, where Judy made our dinner reservations. We got seated into the BEST table in the place. There are only a couple balconies with private tables overlooking downtown palm springs and we were in the best one. It was right on the main street. The food there was also fabulous! Sunday evening we went to Al Dente, where Judy got us another nice table outside. The food was also extremely good here, and very reasonable!

How did we pick which restaurants to even go to? In our room, the Desert Riviera has a list of their reccomendations, and a brief description. We used this to narrow it down. Then we headed for the resort lobby. They have full menus from what must be every restaurant in town. We were able to make sure that there was something that appealed to everyone in our group. (We have one vegetarian in our group, so we cannot go everywhere).

This resort offers something for everyone! We are all in our late 20's and were looking for some more de-stressing and relaxing, and got it. People were gathered outside in the evening, and really made for a nice atmostphere to mingle if you were looking for some fun conversation. Our group was looking to not stay up too late. We did NOT hear folks having fun outside while in our room. The music during the day was a very nice touch. I brought my IPOD, but ended up not using it, as there was nice music already playing. It was at a perfect noise level that allowed everyone outside to enjoy it, but not bother those inside their rooms. The pool was kept extremely clean, and we never saw anything out of place. We noticed that the lounge chairs got wiped down and cleaned during the day. This impressed us quite a bit, as many resorts never clean their deck furniture. The pool deck offered many adjustable umbrellas, which were easily spun around. It allowed you to shade the whole place if you wanted, or nothing. It worked well for our group as we had one person who has very fair skin, and two of us who wanted to bake in the sun. We were able to move an umbrella shade one person, and us other 2 were able to sit directly next to her in the sunlight. I ended up not using the chair too often, as there were very nice rafts in the water. I preferred to float around. There were also plenty of deck chairs, and no need to "save" yourself a chair. Other resorts we have been to, it's a race in the morning to go a reserve yourself a chair. Not here.

I could go on and on about how much all 3 of us really enjoyed this resort. Larry and Judy really give it their all, and you can tell they honestly want to make sure you are happy. Our only 2 compaints are the water temperture in the shower was hard to regulate, and that we did not stay longer. We'll for sure be back next year, and hopefully for longer than 3 nights!

We have stayed at the Desert Riviera now on a number of visits to Palm Springs and California. Travelling all the way from the United Kingdom to such a special location is the way to go.
High quality standards in the rooms and outside too. Great pool, spa and a Bar-B-Q too! Larry, Judy and Patti are fantastic hosts!
We will keep returning!

Unfortunately, we only had 2 nights to spend at this gorgeous, friendly hotel. It boasts everything you want when you travel..clean, comfortable beds, great location and beautiful grounds.
Larry, Patti and Judy made us feel like family, a gracious and sincerely concerned host.

This was our 17th Hotel on this trip and we loved it. Our hosts went to so much trouble to ensure we were well cared for and provided so many extras that a normal hotel would make a charge for.

The pool temperature was 94 degrees and the weather was glorious. The colour co ordinated towels are a great feature and the whole property is pristine

I read an earlier review which was critical of "entertaining" around the pool at night. This was certainly not a feature during our stay of 5 days. Larry does invite guests to join him around the firepit but its optional. Overall , we found it very quiet ,night and day. It does not appear to attract the noisy brigade ,they just wouldn't fit in.

Shame its so far away.

All of the reviews here are accurate so I won't restate the obvious - this is a fantastic little place in Palm Springs. The owners are truly wonderful people and make you feel right at home.

The location is good and convenient, the rooms super clean, the beds plump and soft, the bathrooms well appointed and the grounds beautiful.

If I have one complaint, it's that the pool was too warm for my tastes. But then, it's a minor complaint and one that would certainly not prevent me from staying here again.

You won't regret the opportunity to stay here. It's well worth the money.
