Johannes is a great place to go for great food. Our server brought us 4 small slices of baguette and flavored butter after we ordered. We shared a brussel sprout salad and I had the scallops and my husband had the wiener schnitzel. We finished our bottle of wine before our entrees came so our server brought complementary glasses of wine until our entree arrived. That was a nice touch.....be we really just wanted to eat. We were never offered more bread to hold us over until our meals came. After waiting for a hour and 50 minutes, my husband told our server that we were ready to leave. She assured us it would only be 6 more minutes and in fact our meals did finally arrive. So, it took almost 2 hours to get our meal. When dinner finally came, our entrees were excellent. I would go back to Johannes for the food, but I would definitely mention our first experience before being seated.

Just came back from a wonderful meal at Johannes, thinking that it certainly is will rank in our top ten (five?) for a long time to come! We had high expectations based on the suggestion of a friend, but some concern based on some of the reviews here. Fear not, at least with an Austrian meal: mushroom soup, schnitzel with gruner vetliner, and strudl with coffee. (We also added their often-requested brussel sprout salad [wow!], and a nice proseco at the start.). Tastes ran smoothly together, complementing and refreshing each other wonderfully, and never becoming boring. (Strudl was perhaps a bit non-traditional, but that might a commentary more on the guests than the chef - it was perfectly satisfying in any event!)

We did have reservations (made via open table here on TA), and noticed that even a day in advance, they were well booked. As we ate, there appeared to be a few open tables remaining for walk-ins, but the place is small so reservations are probably a good idea.

The owners have made the most of the building (basically a simple storefront cafe), but favoring a Palm Springs clean and modern feel as opposed to trying to create an imitation "Ratskellar" that could quickly become too cute.

Service was great, with a leisurely but not sloppy pace. When there was an issue with a first choice of wine-by-the-glass not being available, our server had a suggestion at a similar quality and price that worked out nicely. She anticipated that we would want to share the two appetizers and offered to bring second place for the trade before we even had a chance to ask.

When the meal ended, and the bill came, while not an inexpensive meal by any stretch of the imagination, we were surprized at how reasonable the total was for the quality of the experience.

What a great ending to a fun week in Palm Springs!

We went to Johannes 6 months ago on a visit and were debating whether to go twice this time. Sadly we wished we did not go. The process of getting seated to ordering is infuriating. You get a wine list but no menu. So who knows what color or wine type to order unless you have ESP. You then after 10 minutes get a menu but wait another 10 minutes to hear the specials. So from sitting down to getting to order you are 30 minutes in. The waitress, which is a "35 year vet" is the only person for the room of 40 people. It appears Johannes is saving money on staff. She is superficial at best, never pouring wine or asking how things are. the cooking this night is good BUT the duck with lentils does not work. While the duck itself was good, the lentils are bitter. The lamb is overcooked and over sauced. Also the "vegetables" which we could not identify was grossly over salted.
So at this point I have to think our first visit was too good and this visit was closer to reality.
Basically since Johannes was in the kitchen either he lost the handle (manager up front was oblivious) and the food was soulless or this is the new reality. We are not going to take a chance again.

Sunday night 2/9/14 we waited for over 55 minutes to no avail for our food to arrive before we left in frustration. The manager overheard our complaints to the waitress (who was apologetic) but did nothing -- he did not speak to us, nor did anyone offer a complimentary appetizer or glasses of wine for the delay. We left a $20 bill on the table to cover the glass of wine that was ordered and walked out. While the food has been amazing on prior occasions, the service and speed has been getting worse and worse.

Good food at a reasonable price. I had the fish special (fluke) which was a little bland to my taste. One of the people that I was dining with had the same dish and loved it.
