When we drove up, I was a little concerned. The property is obviously an old mid-century motel, and the entry is not the most welcoming. My concerns disappeared as soon as we met the proprietors, Cornelia and Richard. They couldn't have been nicer. They have worked hard to update the property, and everything was clean and comfortable. In addition, they took the time to give us tips on local hotspots, they set out complimentary continental breakfast (including fantastic lavendar scones) in the morning and wine and snacks in the evening, and even gave us tickets to the museum (small but definitely worth seeing) after we mentioned we were planning on going.
If you're looking for a place with the trendiest colors and furniture out of the catalogues, this isn't it. While not unattractive, the room felt like a cross between a B&B and a typical motel. The true charm of the place is the sense, well communicated by Cornelia and Richard, that they're happy to do what they can to make their guests feel welcome and comfortable. With many years in the hospitality business, they know how to hit that sweet spot of being friendly and warm without being overbearing. They've really got "hospitable" down pat. And that's just something the big impersonal hotels can't match.More
