“Atmosphere, Not Modern Luxury”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

What you are paying for mostly is the retro-60/70's atmosphere, nice spa, excellent cocktails and wine list, and beautiful grounds. We stayed in the main building, and our room was kitted out in full retro glory, but the bathroom was OK, kind of old and not a place one wants to hang out for a luxurious bath, the view non-existent (we looked into bushes), and no coffee! (although you can have it delivered for free, but who can anticipate when one wakes up on vacation and when you want coffee?). The restaurants were OK, although expensive for what you get. We ate at both, and enjoyed the coffee shop much more. Mr. Parker tried too hard to be something it was not and their more unusual dishes bombed (confit duck was dry, dry, dry with a relish that didn't make sense - but I'm a San Franciscan foodie, so I guess I'm picky). Stick with the steak. And did I mention, the cocktails are excellent.

Overall, a great place to hang out to absorb old school Palm Springs Glamour. However, if what you want are standard vanilla corporate 5 star facilities, this is not the place for you. We enjoyed it, but we like that kind of thing.

Dear Roastedsquid,

"Standard vanilla corporate 5 star facilities" we are not. We are undoubtedly luxurious; however, we do take a unique approach to this.

We like to enjoy our luxury and not caught up in pretentious approaches to service. Why not have fun at the same time? We're glad you enjoy this also.

Please let me know the next time you're headed this way so we can rectify your impression of mister parker's. He must have a couple of our cocktails that night.

Nice ambience, nice amenities, although a bit pricey. $30. resort fee fro internet, workout room ( a bit meagerly appointed)...just increase rates and include because I find resort fees or extra fees for amenities which hotels offer to be nickle and dimeing guests. If you offer amenities to guests, why charge for them?

So slow service, but friendly service. Nice sized rooms, but walls are paper thin.

Great public spaces.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Parker. I am a repeat guest and I have a fantastic time each time. Their care and concern for their guests is beyond and the property is gorgeous. It can be a bit pricey but they often have specials. Even if you can't afford a night there at least stop by for a drink and a walk around the spectacular property. You'll be glad you did!

If you want a real Palm Spring "experience", stay here. The hotel exudes the mid-century feel of class and elegance combined with modernism. My wife and I stayed here right before the Film Festival, before all the celebrities rolled in. So the feeling was very relaxed and laid back (I'm sure once the Hollywood crowd came it got a bit crazy). The rooms were spacious and very quiet, at least our was. Typical of more "vintage" hotels it wasn't ultra-modern (e.g., the showerhead was pretty low - I am 6' and had to bend down to wet my head). But I have learned to expect that from hotels that are trying to maintain their heritage (e.g. many of the older NYC hotels are like this - elegant, but somewhat dated). So if you are looking for an ultra-modern, less-than-5-year-old resort, this isn't it. But if you want the ambiance of Palm Springs of old, this is it.

I found the service to be very friendly and professional. We were only there one night but our contact with the staff was fine, from the front desk to the waiter at Mister Parker's to the valets.

My wife loved the toiletries, and took them all with her. If you are into that sort of thing.

Dear mpricks,

Our Hollywood crowd are very well behaved, relaxed and laid back (at least while they are here).

We hope to see you again soon. Next time be sure to try the Palm Springs Yacht Club. It redefines what a spa experience can be.

Parker Palm Springs hosted our wedding and from start to finish they were amazing! Everyone is so accommodating and willing to push your experience to the next level. The concierge are wonderful and helped so much even weeks before we arrived to make sure everything was in order. They even had a few surprises for us too! The service is top-notch and very personable. Our wedding was absolutely perfect, and the Parker played a huge part in making it so. We are really looking forward to returning and reliving all the great memories of our day!

I'm a frequent traveler and Platinum guest with Starwood for two years now and was a top-level Mariott member for several years prior. Needless to say, I live in hotels about 150 nights a year across resorts, business hotels and spas and therefore have good baseline from which to assess the Parker.

The property itself at Palm Springs is wonderful. Tall hedge lined gardens with quiet corners framed by water fountains and fire pits define this property. It is truly beautiful. Trees laden with lemons and oranges are abundant and the fruit were ripe and sweet.

A beautiful spa with a heated indoor pool and the heated outdoor pool and jacuzzi were great amenities that made our pleasurable despite the cold. We had a wonderful room with a hammock and some lounging furniture where we spent quite a few hours when the sun peeked out from behind the clouds.

However, the personal service that truly differentiates a top-notch resort from a merely a good property was sadly missing.

At check-in, I sought to inquire about differences among rooms since I had booked a premium room - but the couple traveling with us were in standard room and we were consequently placed in different buildings on the property. In response, the front desk manage was curt and brief. The encounter did not seem friendly and the manager didn't seem particularly in the mood to help.

Through our stay the service desk that attended to our calls / requests wasn't friendly either. When we requested our complimentary morning coffee, we were informed that requests for complimentary coffee were required on the night prior. The attendant made an "exception" and delivered the complimentary anyways - but not without making us feel that she was doing us a favor.

As a platinum member - we requested an delayed checkout - but were denied the option even though it appeared many rooms remained available late into the evening of our check out.

However, the attentive and thoughtful service provided by the poolside attendants (particularly the lone attendant that serviced the family pool) and restaurant staff proved some consolation for the quality of service elsewhere.

Ultimately, I may return to Palm Springs again to offer them the opportunity for a do-over. In the interim, however, my rating reflects the quality (or the lack of it) that I value most in a holiday hotel - service with smile.

Room Tip: The north side of the property is closer to pools and gardens. It is also the more secluded property...

This is a quirky hotel. Starting with the front that looks less like a hotel entry than any I have ever seen. I drove by it thinking it was a side or service area.

You enter in a eclectic lobby of mixed styles. The grounds are beautiful, if so densely vegetated that they can be claustrophobic. Our room was extremely large and comfortable. It is solely for leisure however - there is nothing resembling a desk you can sit at to work or use a computer (though wifi is free, or at least you can say it is included in the mandatory "resort fee", as is the valet parking).

One qualm - there is a prominent sign in the lobby that says "drugs" and a poster that says "LSD in the restaurant. Yes there is rock and roll theme in the decor, with lots of pictures of 60's rockers. But still I think it is inappropriate for a hotel that gets lots of kids.

While they try to hide it this is still a corporate hotel - being a Starwood property. You will find no signs telling you this, or even a SPG Preferred check in line at the desk. But is there. Norma's, an innovative breakfast themed restaurant is also in the Le Meridian (which this still is in the Starwood world) in NYC with the same menu (I did not eat in this one but have been to the one in NYC and it was very good, if extremely high caloric).

Room Tip: There is one large outbuilding and a bunch of smaller ones. The large north building is the one with...

Dear markds,

We are pleased that you have enjoyed your stay with us so thoroughly.

The hedge that embraces the entire Estate permits us to maintain our sense of privacy and escape from the outside world. It does make the entrance of the Estate a little harder to find than the standard hotel but we don't think a big corporate sign is what our guests are looking for.

Please let me know the next time you're headed this way. Look forward to welcoming you back soon.
