“A world away--loved it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013 via mobile

If you like nature, and a bird's eye view, you have to take a half day up here on the mountain. A magical pine forest with bark that smells like butterscotch.....cool rocks, chirping grey squirrels, spongy meadows, and great views of the valley floor. I only wish we had brought a picnic and found a secluded spot to enjoy it!

“A Must do!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2013

Loved it here, an alpine wilderness, which is quite inviting after 93 degree heat. Make sure you are equipped for the walks and have plenty of water and a good camera. Pick up a leaflet $6 from the rangers office and see what wildlife you come across. We spotted a 'skink', a type of lizard with an electric blue tail which the ranger said was a rare sighting! The views are breathtaking! Also in the rangers office they have the skins of some road kill that they have preserved, worth a look.

“High Desert; Higher Mountains”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2013

I understand Palm Springs is considered 'high' desert. If so, it is surrounded by even higher 10,000' San Jacinto Mountains. Breathtaking beauty from the desert floor, or the near mountain top [the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway goes to an altitude of 8,000'].

The tramway is well-organized, and filled with helpful information. I don't know if it is possible to by tickets in advance. We had about a 25 minute wait. The gondola itself has a floor that revolves twice in the ascent/descent so you get to see everything.

At the top there are several eating areas and a bar; shops for souvenirs; and spectacular views of the Coachella Valley.

The top of the tramway can be 20 - 30 degrees cooler than the base area, so be prepared.

“Beautiful trail and views”

Take lots of water and good shoes! This climb is for the moderate hiker - the first part is quite steep.
