Any time I have company one of the things I make sure they see is this beautiful palm reserve. Pack a lunch a see it in all its beauty.

A wonderful two mile hike to the largest oasis in the US (I believe) Easy to navigate, just take plenty of water with you. There are many other trails to explore, but they are longer and more difficult, and recommend doing them early in the am.

Killing two birds with one stone, the Coachella Valley Preserve allows visitors both to visit a series of lush fan palm oases in the midst of beautiful desert and the opportunity to view the buckled earth of the San Andreas Fault up close. Located in Thousand Palms Canyon, only a few miles to the northwest of rancho Mirage, the Preserve offers miles of scenic and varied trails, beautiful terrain for photography and countless opportunities to view unique desert wildlife. Best part -- unlike the equally scenic Indian Canyons. the Preserve is free to visit.

This visit surpassed expectations. You drive to it through the desert to the parking area and small visitors center. the look walk is level and about 1/2 mile. Walking through the groves of wild palm trees where the leaves have not been trimmed is beautiful.
