Moorten's is a unique opportunity to view mature succulents, some that appear to date back to the original home from the 1920s. Of special interest are the gigantic agaves along with the Cactarium that overwhelms your eyes with cactus to look at in every direction. Moorten's has a unique patina that comes with age, enjoy it for what it is-- it's refreshing that it's not polished and plastic. It's like going back in time to a 1930s Californian botanist's garden. Owners are onsite and available to answer questions. Although the garden is probably spectacular when the cactus are blooming in Mar/Apr, it was still great in June and there is some shade for those hot afternoons.

If you're looking for a plantarium, be sure to check this place out. They offer a wide variety of cacti and plants from all of the world. The self guided tour is about half an hour and it's pretty cheap to enter. We spoke with Clark Moorten, the owner and operator, he was very nice and provided us a bit of history with the garden. Definitely worth checking out!

Our timing was great for catching blooms and the short walk through the garden was stunning--we took many photos. The turtles and doves were a wonderful bonus and the staff was friendly. Guests could purchase small plants for great prices.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The idea is terrific and they do have a very extensive and interesting collections of cactus specimens, some very large. However, it is strange that the place is so run-down. It really needs TLC and basically just some re-planting and cleaning up. Why are they too lazy to do it? Wouldn't take much investment, just some labor. If you want to call yourself a "Botanical Garden" then it should be nice to look at and not weedy, run-down and overgrown. Also the signage could be much better, they could explain more about the plants and where they come from and the experience would be much more interesting and pleasant with not much extra effort. They just don't seem to care much about how it looks, just want to collect your money. The best thing was the cacti for sale, they had a lot to offer and at good prices, especially a lot of small cuttings.

This Garden is WELL worth visiting....It's small-ish but they creatively lead you along paths lined with amazing cacti, succulents, trees, serene corners, surprises only sharp eyes might catch.....and the green house is just beyond description.....as you walk in, you start to feel you are on another planet.....strange scraggly plants reach down to terrify you....Ooopos! Sorry....Have your own experience. Maybe it's ShangriLa, or Fantasy Island.....
