Weather was over 100 degrees all week but we had an awesome time. Hotel has many pools to chose from and a boat on a lake to shuttle you from the main building to restaurants. Rooms where very large and very well equipped. Good air conditioned car, awesome room and was not bothered by the heat

Our family of five (with 3 little ones) stayed from Aug. 22-30 in a 2BR in building 673 in the Mesquite section across from the playground/pool. We had a view of the golf course and mountains. We ended up using the main Palmeras pool instead of the closest pool to our building the whole time time since it had a 1-ft pool for our one year old plus the adult pools and hot tub. It was just a short walk. It was busy on weekends but most days there were plenty of chairs and umbrellas for all of us.

Our unit was fine and the landscaping was well maintained. Some of the furnishings are starting to show their age and could be replaced in a year or two. Recent upgrades included new large flat screen TVs and new DVD players. We found the front desk staff to be friendly and helpful while we were there. Check in and check out was a breeze. The only complaint we have would be the tiny ants that manage to get inside the kitchen area. We noticed some ant traps underneath the sink. Not a big problem if you don't leave any food out. Overall, we had a good experience with the services and amenities at the resort. For fun, we went to the night festival in Palm Springs on Thursday, shopped at the Desert Premium Outlet, and had great burgers in In N Out Burgers (must try them if you've never had one of their burgers before).

Next time we will stay at the Shadow Ridge just for a change in scenery. Would recommend the MDSII to anybody who has small children and would like extra a little extra space to stretch.

This was my first time at Marriott's Desert Springs Villas II. The place didnt have a restaurant or a bar.Its more like a vacation home but premium on demand tv and basic hotel services would have been nice. The walls are paper thin and we had to put up with loud upstairs guests who were extremely loud and rowdy. Service was good but for the amount we paid - I could have stayed at a lot nicer places. The good thing about this is the size - its very large compared to hotel rooms and has all the nice amenities you would want. bathrooms were really old and could use a remodeling but was worth the stay.

I rented a two bedroom villa for six family members for $300 per night. Grounds, pool and room were nice. However, the couch sleeper was TERRIBLE. Very thin, uncomfortable mattress. Also we were shocked to learn that check-out time was 10:00 a.m. Called to ask for later check-out and was told no. $300 a night and check-out at 10? We will NOT be returning.

Very unorganized-no one in housekeeping speaks english-sloppy front desk-can't get rooms made up till late at night-not to Marriott standards-right hand has no clue what left hand is doing-rude guy at gate name dave-golf has the twenty year old kids inside working while the elderly is outside working-all this people need to go back and learn customer service

The Good:
Our villa was great - very roomy, comfortable, immaculate, well stocked with all the appliances and gadgets (full kitchen, washer, dryer, microwave, blender, glasses, silverware, the works!) we could possibly need, truly heavenly beds that Marriotts are known for, 3 TVs, DVD player, plenty of furniture (i.e, several couches and seats, bar stools, a 6 person dining area, patio lounge chairs, etc.). The grounds are absolutely magnificent and vast, not to mention well kept - everywhere you looked was like a postcard - mountains, palm trees, waterfalls, ponds, all sorts of birds, desert patches everywhere (all sorts of cacti, rocks, sand, aloe, and other desert flowers), grassy hills, majestic sunsets - taking walks at various times throughout the day is a must because as the sun moves, the colors change; and of course, 9 pools and various hot tubs all over the property. The Palmeras Pool (which is the main and largest pool) had ongoing entertainment (water balloon tosses, giant Jenga, chess and checkers tournaments, volleyball and a little music). My only complaints about the pool was that there weren't enough umbrellas for shade. With temperatures averaging 107 each day, sometimes we just needed to get out of the sun, and unfortunately, you had to get there before 8AM to secure a shady spot. Also, the pool bar and grill closed extremely early (the grill closed at 5pm and the bar closed at 6pm) even though guests could continue using the pool throughout the night. I'd like to also add that the staff was very nice, friendly, and willing to assist whenever necessary.

The Bad:
Aside from hanging out at the pool and taking walks, the only other activities available were tennis, golf, bike riding, and working out at the gym (which was always very crowded). Let me add that only the pool(s) and the gym were available free of charge. To play tennis, golf or use the bicycles, you had to pay a fee (for time and for equipment). Months ago when I booked the trip, I called the Villas and asked if guests had access to the amenities and activities at the neighboring JW Marriott, and I was told we were. To our disappointment, those privileges have been done away with as of January 1, 2010, but we were not informed prior to our trip. Villas guests can still access the JW Marriott (you can drive across the road or ride the shuttle that leaves every half hour), but all activities required some pretty hefty fees (for example, to use the gym, it costs $20, which is outrageous - I mean how long would your workout have to be to make it worth $20). Another thing is that keeping in mind these are villas and all guests are there for a minimum of a week, and that many will be eating and cooking several meals in their villas, I found that the Marketplace (the "general store" on property) was tiny and didn't have much to offer (you could buy a protein bar or bottled water and a pre-made sandwich, but for anything substantial you had to go off property). Luckily, we found a supermarket a half mile away and were able to stock up for the week. Unfortunately, we had to explore and find it on our own because the concierges (there were several different ones throughout the week) weren't very knowledgeable about the area (they were only able to offer information about tour companies and on-site activities, which anyone could get by watching the villas info channel on TV or reading the guest manual in each room).

And on that note, here's The Ugly:
Because we're from NY and weren't planning on driving while in Palm Springs, I called the Villas before I booked the trip, to ask specifically about tours, tourist attractions, and local transportation. I mentioned that we wouldn't be driving and was told we wouldn't have a problem because even though everything was pretty far, it was all very accessible. Not true. To our disappointment, none of the tour companies picked up at the Villas or at the JW Marriott - to take a tour you had to actually drive to a location to be picked up (for example, to go on a jeep tour of the desert you had to drive to the tour company, where you were picked up and taken to another location to board the jeep), When we asked if there were any stores in the area, we were told that most people drive into the city, but no one was able to give us taxi or bus info, and it was suggested we look it up online.

Needless to say, it was quite frustrating, but we made the best of our stay. We spent the week soaking up the sun, cooling off and relaxing at the pool, going on nature walks, taking tons of pictures, and meeting and talking to the other guests. Despite our situation, I would still recommend the Villas to others, but I would be sure to let them know that a car is an absolute must. My suggestion to the Villas and/or Marriott is that they update their description of the property to specify (1) that a car is necessary, not optional, (2) that tours are not available from the Villas, (3) that groceries need to be purchased off property, (4) that access to activities and amenities at the JW Marriott is no longer in effect, and (5) that there are fees attached to all activities except the pool and the gym.

If you remember that these are TIME SHARES and not a hotel, you will enjoy it more. That means things like:

- time shares do not have DAILY MAID SERVICE (you can get it, it costs an extra $6/day).
- time shares do not have BELL BOYS (carry your own luggage up)
- time shares do not have ROOM SERVICE

If people remember these differences, it can help adjust your expectations.

The GREAT things that timeshares DO have, include:

- HUGE rooms with loads of space to spread out
- HUGE kitchens so you can cook for your kids and handle snacks (and save $)
- FUN events for children, teens, family and seniors

Marriott does an exceptionally great job of keeping their properties clean and updated. Many, many other (older, non branded) timeshares are just plain yucky -- but I have never been disappointed with a Marriott.

A couple of disappointments here to me were:
- the pools are REALLY crowded - mainly because its hotter than HECK in the desert
- there were a ton of crickets clinging to the walls at night (outside) - kind of creepy
- the pools were obviously cloudy and (yuck - ) probably totally full of kid-pee by 4pm (they should consider having mandatory "everyone out for 5 minutes at the top of each hour" - like they do at public pools in So. Cal -- forcing the parents to take kids to the potty).

Overall, it was a very nice experience - lovely grounds, great activities and huge rooms with comfy beds.
