“Terrible”
Reviewed April 26, 2010

Walls in the rooms are VERY thin and much of the hotel clientel were the young tatooed party crowd that brought home their dinner from McDonalds we noticed. The free breakfast was really bad! This is our first and last experience with Holiday Inn Express through Hotwire. They rated it 3 stars but there is no way this was that good.

We paid $64 on Hotwire which is a fantastic rate for this hotel (normally $149 a night).

For $64 it is fantastic. For $149 I would possibly be dissappointed. Then again, Palm Springs/Palm Desert can be expensive so was really lucky to have got this for the rate we did.

The pool is spacious and there is a hot tub. It's quiet, and is perfect for the kids as it is only a max of 5ft deep.

The breakfast is decent, although only one fruit choice. There are yoghurts, cereals (3 types), pastries (about 3 types), bagels, muffins, english muffins, eggs, bacon or sausage, biscuits etc. Plus a variety of juices and fresh cartons of milk.

Most of the front desk staff are nice and helpful - especially Karina - she is lovely and so helpful.

There is free internet and there is also a pc and printer on 2nd floor for public use which is really handy if you don't have a laptop with you or if you want to print stuff.

There is a laundry on site but only has 1 washer and 1 dryer, but it is adequate. There is also a small gym which consists of a treadmill, crosstrainer, reclined bike and some weights.

Beds are doubles which is a shame as would have preferred queens, but for $64 I am not complaining.

Not noticed the walls are thin like other people have mentioned. It all seems pretty quiet to me - then again, my kids are maybe drowing out the other noise :-)

I'd happily recommend this at the price we got it for. Perhaps if you have to pay $149 for it ($179 at the weekend) there could be better options - but still, nice enough and the location really is very central to all the restaurants, shopping malls etc. Albertsons right across the road and CVS next door!.

Courteous front desk staff. Apples and cookies a nice touch. Wish there was more fresh fruit at breakfast. Walls a bit thin and showerhead needs updating. My doorlock was a bit sticky.

On Hotwire I booked a 3 star hotel with 85% positive ratings for $94 a night -- which turned out to be the Holiday Inn Express Palm Desert. TripAdvisor rates this a 2-1/2 star establishment, with 74% positive ratings. Two stars is really more like it.

The rooms are the smallest I have seen in decades. At the front desk I negotiated for a larger room facing the pool (instead of Highway 111) for an additional $15 a night. That's when I saw the the pool is right next door to a poorly-screened electric plant. A huge smokestack decorated to look like a palm tree looms overhead. Worse, the pool wasn't heated and thus was too cold for more than the briefest swim. (After inquiries the front desk said the pool WAS heated and a guest might have monkeyed with the controls. They promised it would be corrected. Later that day my daughter reported the pool was marginally warmer but still very cold. The pool area borders on shabby, with rusty gates, crummy looking landscaping, etc.

The walls are extremely thin. We heard the guests next door engaged in amore with embarrassing clarity. (Thankfully our young daughter was asleep). At 8:00 a.m. sharp on Easter morning they cranked up the pool-cleaning equipment, which woke us all up.

On the plus side the sheets are a cut above, there's free Internet, and the complimentary breakfast is decent. (Though there is NOT a full service restaurant on premises, as a 3-star hotel should have.)

The front desk clerk argued with me when I asked why our room had not been cleaned. She told me there was a do not disturb sign on the door when in fact there was not. At 8:30 AM the maid knocked on our door and I said we would be leaving the room soon, and to come back in a few minutes. She did not speak english so I assume she didn't understand me. Reguardless the creep at the front desk just started telling me it was my fault and did nothing to try and see if I needed anything. Overall the place needs some sprucing up.

First the positives -- building is set back from the highway so very quiet. Location in Palm Desert is great as far as I am concerned -- just east of the El Paseo district and the mall and other retail. Front desk service was fine and the room was spotless and well appointed ( a little small but we had a big discount so no complaints there).

A couple qualified negatives -- nice variety of foods for breakfast but eggs and sausage are not restaurant quality. Tennis court needs sprucing up to match the attractiveness of the rest of the site.

More details:

Room -- Drapes were perfectly clean and there was no hint of smoke odor during our stay. First floor rooms have a nice little patio (not private) and upper floors have balconies. We were disappointed that there were no L.A. channels on the TV (wanted to see the Laker game). There were two premium channels (HBO and HBO family) along with the usual basic cable stuff -- lots of sports. The TV is on a swivel so it would be very easy to hook up a portable DVD player. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom has a fan but no heater / heat lamp.

Breakfast -- Eggs seemed like they were re-constituted; sausage was fine. The cinnamon rolls are quite good. There were mini-muffins, bagels, and bread to toast -- but a not a big selection. The milk in my wife's carton was very spoiled though no one else seemed to have that problem.

Pools and exercise room -- didn't check those out....

Neighborhood -- right next door to a Best Western; full service grocery across the street and several fast food, pizza, and coffee shop type restaurants close by.

We got a good deal through Hotwire who claimed this to be a three star hotel. While the outside of the hotel and lobby are very nicely appointed, our room was quirky and more like a two star establishment. Nothing special. All the rooms were supposed to be non-smoking, but ours definitely smelled like smoke. My guess is someone nearby was smoking on their small patio and it wafted in.

Breakfast was just OK, and though they keep the coffee carafes in the lobby stocked all day, the coffee was awful. To me the staff was polite, but not overly welcoming. Perhaps we were pegged as Hotwire customers?

Funny story: on our way to check out the elevator wouldn't come to the third floor. Turns out it was getting serviced, so we had to lug our bags down two flights of stairs. No one offered to help us. Basically we got what we paid for.
