Best Western Plus Palm Desert Resort
Ranked #7 of 23 Hotels in Palm Desert
Reviewed January 4, 2013

The big plus side of this hotel is the friendly staff. We booked using Priceline and were initially told over the phone that we could not change the room from a king to a double queen (to accommodate our party of 3) because we had booked with a third party. I was surprised at the response and told the person on the phone that other hotels have always done their best to give us what we requested. In spite of what we had been told, when we arrived we were warmly greeted and given a room with a king bed and a sofa couch, which fit our needs perfectly. When we called the front desk for extra blankets and towels, we received more than we had asked for by Larry from the front desk. He more than made up for the negative interaction on the phone. I must also add that the hotel appeared to be very full the night we stayed.

Another plus worth mentioning is the free breakfast in the morning. There is a short menu to choose from and two chefs make all breakfasts as they are ordered. The line to get breakfast at 9am was pretty long, but it went quickly as the chefs were working as fast as they possibly could. They were amazing. The breakfast choices included combinations of sausage, bacon, eggs (any way you want them) and hash browns. Other choices included an oatmeal option and one with yogurt and fruit. Juice, coffee, and toast were available as well. It was delicious!

The minus sides were many. The mattress on the king bed felt like a cheap mattress with no firmness at all (and I'm not talking about a luxurious pillow-top experience). I've never slept on such a cheap mattress and couldn't believe the lack of quality. The towels were thin and scratchy. The floor was a hard wood laminate. It's a pet friendly hotel, so maybe that's why they don't have carpet. There was something wrong with the latch on the door to our room and we had to slam it in order for it to shut. We could hear other doors slamming shut, too. We were on the 1st floor (my mistake not to ask for the top floor) and whenever someone ran water in the bathroom above us, we could hear it in our room. Our room had arcadia doors opening to the courtyard, which was loud also because of kids running around in the grass. Fortunately for us, we travel with a "noise maker" so when we went to bed all we could hear was the sound of our waterfall.
Although the bathtub surround was clean and free of mold, the faucet and drain needed updating. The sink faucet was also outdated, in spite of an updated granite-looking countertop.
We had a flatscreen TV and free wireless internet that both worked fine. We also had a mini-refrigerator that was great for keeping our waters cold and our ice frozen.
With some more updating, this property could be much more desirable. Otherwise, we'll be staying elsewhere next time we are in town.

Room Tip: I'd choose a room on top floor because of plumbing noises.

This was far from a being a resort, with the rooms facing outwards and accessible to anyone, more motel like. The WIFI was terrible, never worked in our room in the 300's.
At breakfast, my teenage son who is a big eater asked for a bit more on his plate, the cooks denied him anymore food saying he already had enough. I never heard of this before, as I am not a big eater he could have had my portion. We were staying with older grandparents who were disabled and put as far away from the lobby as possible, how is that helpful?
As in a past review, our message light was blinking but we could not get messages, we had to call down and were still unable to get them.
We asked for a 1 hour late check out due to an emergency with our car and the front denied it saying it was not possible on the weekend. We packed but stayed in the room until our car was returned and were harassed every 10 minutes about when we were leaving.
I will give some stars for the cleanliness of the room, although the towels were very itchy and dry, definitely cheap and needed a upgrade. The fitness room was nice, although to use the treadmill one had to walk to the front to get a "key", so it couldn't be used right after someone else. It also could have used some towels, wipes for wiping off the equipment after someone used it.
The made to order breakfast was popular with my group, but could have used some fruit and more healthy options. I will regrettably not stay here next time I am in town, but will try the many options nearby.

Room Tip: All rooms face out, I would say a room at the top so you don't hear anyone above you.

This was a return visit for us, having enjoyed our stay last year. Although the room was as before and yes, the hot breakfasts are reall good, regrettably we won't be returning.
The Wifi was intermittent and these days such unreliability is unacceptable. Could be overload in a busy hotel, but that's not the point.
Also, we missed 3 urgent calls as the msg light on the phone wasn't working. When we did access the msgs we found previous ones going back 4 months - guess the light had been down since then. To be fair, Reception arranged for this to be fixed when alerted.
Just met another guest who's been trying to download a movie for 2 hours - that's how slow the 'fast internet' is running when it works.
Online access and faultless messaging are essentials these days, please step up BW and resolve these 'must have' services.

We had a great stay here. Larry at the front desk was extremely helpful and gave us excellent tips for local area. We spent 2 nights on our way to Phoenix, then stopped for another 2 nights on our return.
Rooms were clean and roomy, guest laundry facilities clean, and the outdoor areas were well kept.
The breakfast was great. Cooked to order eggs or pancakes, plus cereal choices. One of the best free breakfasts at a hotel I have had.
Thanks again to Larry for making our stays so enjoyable.

Enjoyed the friendly welcome by Larry. Our one bedroom suite was spacious and comfortable. We also were surprised how quiet it was and loved the small, grassy yard outside the patio area. Beautiful landscaping surrounded the buildings. The best surprise was the breakfast! Two chefs, making cooked-to-order breakfasts. Very tasty and the roomy dining room was an added bonus. Thank you!
