I recently attended the Nick Faldo Golf School at Marriott Shadow Ridge in Palm Desert California. I will break this review into 4 sections: The Golf Instruction, Golf Facilities, Golf Course and the hotel accommodations.1. Golf Instructions – The staff here is great. Our instructor was Rich Hayden. He and all the other instructors are ex-tour players who know how to analyze your individual swing and teach you many drills to improve your game. The student to teacher ratio is 4 to 1 max but we enjoyed a 2 to 1 ratio. There is video analysis of your swing (a before and after video is provided to each student with instructor commentary and drill suggestions.) Excellent work books are provided. I never felt that we were part of an assembly line but rather unique people with unique corrective action requirements. Play-lessons are part of the 3 day school and it was an outstanding experience.2. Golf Facilities - it is hard to imagine a better golf instruction facility. Wonderful grass driving range, several large putting greens and 2 short game areas. The facility allow you to practice every difficult shot in golf including down hill/side hill greenside bunker shots, down hill and up hill fairway bunker shots, down hill-side hill fairway shots etc. You get the picture. The short game areas allow for targets from about 150 yards and in. Honestly, this is one of the best, if not THE best practice facility on the entire west coast of the USA! It is remarkable and in great condition in winter as well as in the summer. If you are in the area, you have to drop in and check it out!3. Golf Course – this Nick Faldo designed course is one of the true gems of the Palm Springs area. I have played it several times and it seems to be in better condition than the courses at PGA WEST or La Quinta. It is a challenging track with long par 3s and 4s. It is not a gimmicky course and lacks the fairway lumps of the numerous Pete Dye courses in the area but, let me tell you, it is the real deal and well worth a trip just to play the course.4. Accommodations – we stayed at the Marriott Shadow Ridge condos. These are well appointed new condos. The larger units can easily accommodate a family of 4 and the smaller units are great for a couple. Pricing directly through Marriott for a Shadow Ridge condo or room is quite high but if booked through LODGING.COM, the price can be tremendously less expensive. This is not a full featured hotel but, rather, beautiful condos within walking distance of the golf school, practice facility and golf course. One last comment about the instructor…our instructor Rich Hayden joined us for a round of golf on his day off. This was not a play-lesson but rather just 3 guys of varying skills enjoying a round together.
