We stayed two nights in a room with queen bed, soaking tub and fireplace. The room was small but very clean. Not much room to open our two suitcases. There was only one straight chair in the room for sitting. The Wi-Fi coverage in our room was very poor as I had to stand by the outside door to obtain a very weak signal. Only regular coffee and orange juice were available in the office after 8 AM. We did enjoy the soaking tub, but the outside temperature was too warm for us to use the fireplace. Being so warm, at night with the window open, we could hear the ocean several blocks away. The motel was located in a quiet residential neighborhood.
This was our fourth overnight visit to Pacific Grove over the past 7 years. Each time I have chosen lodging based upon both price and comments found under Trip Advisor staying at four different places. We got an excellent price directly booking through the establishment, and we would consider returning when again in the area.

On Asilomar and a block from the beach makes a great location. The good: windows open, mini fridge, solid surface floor for cleanliness and average beds and linens with not so great 2 pillows/bed and very flat (always bring my own so it worked). Many motels/hotels provide 4 pillows/bed which Ive grown quite used to. Bad: no counter by the fridge for ice bucket, supplies and goodies, no microwave, no counter in bath for toiletries (pedestal sink with cubbies), toilet/shower/sink in one room and not separated, very little room on small nite stand for book or Kindle and overall a complete lack of shelves to place items that you normally travel with. Because it is an older property there are not the usual plugs for your devices. The decor is very traditional and somewhat heavy for the size of the room. There is not any type of continental breakfast. There is a coffee maker in the room. It was very nice to be greeted by such friendly front desk and housekeeping staff.

Upon our arrival to Monterey, my mom and I stopped at the Visitors Center to research hotels. We wanted to have a spur-of-the-moment experience while in Monterey and chose not to make lodging reservations before we arrived. We stumbled upon the Sunset Inn and called to check their availability for the night. It turns out they had one room left so we jumped at the chance to book it. The drive from Monterey thru Pacific Grove to the Sunset Inn is very adorable. The shops and dining area along Lighthouse Avenue resemble a small town and at the time had a very apparent inviting, autumn-feel with pumpkins and scarecrows displayed in the storefronts. The Sunset Inn was everything we needed for our stay: clean bathroom, cozy room including an electric fireplace for an added heat source and a friendly, informative office employee. When we return to the Monterey/Pacific Grove area, we will most definitely plan to stay at the Sunset Inn again.

More than happy with everything at sunset. We ended up with a balcony, hot tub, gas fire and awesome bed. Barbara was very warm and welcoming, nothing being too much trouble. No breakfast but we knew that and 20mins up road was perfect breakfast joint. Would have no hesitation booking again or recommending sunset to anyone. Thanks Barbara.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms with a hot tub, 202/203.

The value for money was great at Sunset Inn. We stayed 2 nights in a jacuzzi & fireplace room that was large & spacious for us 2. We booked online a couple months before our stay & got a cheaper online rate. Barbara at the front desk was very pleasant & we felt very welcomed. A little out of the way but well worth the drive to be away from all the noise near Cannery Row. We did have a little bit of trouble with the fireplace 1 nite but it worked ok in the morning so not sure if the property shuts the gas lines off at a certain time. I definitely would recommend this place for a good value in the Monterrey area!

We had a nice stay on a Saturday night visiting the area. We were able to walk everywhere and were a block from the beach, Pinos Lighthouse and Pinos Point grill. Barbara had wine and huge cheese tray which we enjoyed for a evening snack/meal since we had a late lunch. I read others complaining about the thin walls - which we did hear more noises than other places we've stayed but you have to consider that with the age of this inn, walls will be thin. Our room was spotless and the bed was super comfy. We got a great rate because we kept an eye on their website and I noticed that the rates change all the time with demand or by prepaying. Our room was just under a $100 because we booked early but we would have paid much more. What a deal at a nice little historical place and friendly hostess who knows the area.

Sunset Inn is truly a place to relax and unwind. It's in a perfect location, and Barbara the Innkeeper is very hospitable. Sunset is in a perfect location, a short walk to the beach, and down the street from The Fishwife restaurant. This time we didn't get the sauna room, but the room we had was just as endearing with a large tile shower with skylight. The only other thing I would want in the rooms is a microwave. Sunset is now our regular retreat on the Monterey Peninsula.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are special.
