Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages
Ranked #14 of 17 Hotels in Pacific Grove
Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

Cottages outside: adorable. Inside: wow outdated and badly done the first time around. Also, we agree with the other review, don't stay in lodge side unless you're accustomed to sleeping in a hotel that charges hourly. That side even overlooks a graveyard.
Try to book a cottage early if it's cold out, their strange heating system takes FOREVER to heat the room.
They originally tried to put us in a lodge room; we stayed less than 5 mins and we're happy to pay extra for the cottage but it wasn't a ton better. We would not stay here again.

The only reason to stay in the lodge rooms is if you either are a dog, so you don't care about quality, or you bring a dog with you, as they are allowed to stay here for an extra $50.00 fee. The rooms are very old and worn out and unpleasant, appearing unclean. We had a room with a gas fireplace that was making a constant noise. Their fix was to turn off the pilot so there was no noise and no useable fireplace, but with no discount for the extra cost of the fireplace. When we saw a mouse run through the room, they gave us another room for the night, we had to move all our luggage ourselves to the opposite end of the property, and after saying we would get the night free they then said it would be only a small discount. The breakfast is awful, we went out every morning. The location and ability to bring your dog are the only reason to consider this place. We will look for other accommodations that are dog friendly next trip.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms seem a bit nicer as they have high ceilings.

We have always had a wonderful time staying in the cottages. The rooms are older, but cozy, clean and spacious! The bathrooms are huge with modern travertine floors and showers. The location cannot be beat being only a short walk to the ocean! An added touch is the wine and cheese in the evening and breakfast each morning!

Room Tip: Choose the cottages acrossed the street from the motel!

If you are looking for a basic place to stay with a few amenities, this is a good option in Pacific Grove. Room was clean, bed comfortable, and the free wi-fi was fast - I didn't need to pay for the high speed to access all of my work items. Breakfast was the same daily - scrambled eggs, potatoes, hot oatmeal, one cold cereal option, fruit and toast. Good enough for free. The pool is small. The rooms are showing their age. The bathroom sink counter was limited. The place was not full but it had the potential for being noisy. It seemed like if I had neighbors next to me, I would hear everything because it was somewhat noisy when the neighbors 2 doors down did anything. Definitely ask for the top floor to reduce this issue. Great location and parking is plentiful. Good place if you do not care about anything fancy.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs

We have stayed at this property several times over the past 10 years and it seems to change ownership a lot. This time our room wasn't ready at 3:00 and the clerk took my cell phone to call me when it was ready. She never called, I had to call back. The room is dated and hasn't changed much over the years. The comforter is very worn (looks like it came from a garage sale) and the screen door had a large tear in it. Even though we reported it, it was never fixed. Guess it wasn't a priority. One of the main reasons we like to stay here is the complimentary full breakfast and evening wine/appetizers in the lodge. The breakfast was disappointing as well as the evening appetizers. Seems like they are trying to cut costs and it shows! The cottages are supposed to be remodeled next year and I was told that the general manager is "temporary". I hope they get their act together, because this used to be a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have an extra window, which is nice for brightness and fresh air.

I made a change in plans so came into Pacific Grove on Wednesday morning with no reservations. The Sunset Inn was sold out and they recommended this property. My room overlooked the cemetery so it was super quiet. The balcony & fireplace were a nice touch. I could hear the ocean at night. The property is worn and needs serious cleaning and remodeling but it was quiet and in a great location. Close to the 17 Mile drive, walk to the beach, close to Monterey Bay Aquarium, golf, restaurants, lighthouse and state parks even Carmel and Big Sur. Reasonable price for the area just needs a facelift.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the cemetery are very quiet.

My husband and I stayed here for a night while we were driving up the coast. The hotel is in a great location not far from the beach, we were able to walk to it in a few minutes. This was great for watching the sunset. The room we had was a corner room on the 2nd floor of the main lodge. It was huge with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, and a nice balcony. You could see a tiny bit of the ocean from the balcony as well as the cemetery behind the lodge. I actually liked the peaceful view out back of the woods and cemetery. The room itself was very outdated but the price we paid for a Friday night in the Pacific Grove/Monterey area was a very good value. The property used to offer a bbq dinner but they gave discontinued that, I think it is under new ownership. However, they did offer a full breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast/bagles, potatoes, juice and coffee. We would probably stay here again if we could get the same price.
