Owner description: The Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, the Peninsula's only municipal golf course, is often called the "poor man's Pebble Beach."

PG used to have a beautiful little golf course, but water problems on the Monterey Peninsula have caused some fairways to deteriorate to a frightening degree. Back nine along the ocean is still a great experience-- front nine not so much.

The front nine goes away from the ocean and is better protected from the wind and the back is along the coast. It is a municipal course so nearly anyone can afford to play yet it has these wonderful greens along the ocean.

This is a nice enough course that more than makes up for it's very average course layout and conditions with beautiful views and wildlife. I have never seen more than one or two deer on any course and I saw 20 deer on a single hole at PG Links. The coastline of Pacific Grove rivals those of any in the area and you get plenty of great views on the back 9 here. No one will confuse this place with Pebble Beach...but you can play here daily for a week for the price of one round at one of the big boys on the 17 mile drive.

We were looking forward to playing "the poor man's Pebble Beach." The front side is amongst the trees. The back niine has great ocean views. Deer roam the course. It had great potential but it was ruined by too many people on the course, slow play and no marshals to keep the slow players moving. Apparently they usually do have marshals, but there was a staffing problem that day. Or so we were told. Startiing off with two par threes slowed play from the beginning and it never did get better. When we finished the round one of the employees asked how we liked it. When we were less than enthusiastic and mentioned the pace of play he challenged us with where else can you play for that price on the peninsula? Not what we wanted to hear. We won't play it again. The slow play took all the enjoyment out if it.

As others have said, the course may be short and less challenging than others in the area, it makes up for it with the amazing views on the back 9. It's easy to get distracted and lose concentration but I enjoyed golfing there. Since we golfed on a Tuesday, pace of play was just over 4 hours with not too much waiting for our foursome.
