“OK Itialian”

Il Vecchio's was recommended by our hotel for "good Italian" food in Monterey. Located out side the tourist area ( 110 Central Ave. ) it was easy to find and moderately busy. Our table was small and placed by the kitchen door; there were other options we saw. The hostess said the options were not possible for only two dinners. The food was OK ... the fresh pasta was limited and the sauce was not up to "East Coast" standards. Summary ... when in Monterey ... stay close to the sea.

“Good food but not a good waiting experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

We read good things about this place on Trip Advisor and decided to try it out during our visit to Monterey this past weekend. Wanted some good Italian food before our half marathon the next morning. I called a couple of weeks before and made a reservation for 2 people at 6:45 PM. We showed up right on time and were told that it would be a few minutes. 15 minutes later, still waiting. We overhead a woman ask the hostess how long their wait was going to be. The hostess told her that since she was a walk-in they wouldn't be seated until the reservations were taken care of. Literally 30 seconds later, a table for 2 opened up and she sat them instead of us!

We did not get any satisfactory answers as to what was going on and we ended up waiting for 45 minutes before we were seated. This included them seating a few tables of 4 who were all walk-ins. We felt that since we had made the reservation and had been waiting for so long, they should have sat us at the 4 top table.

To their credit, the hostess was very polite and did offer us complimentary glasses of wine to make up for the wait (we had to turn it down b/c of the race the next morning). I got the impression she was new and wasn't quite sure of herself yet.

Once we were seated, the service was great (while we were waiting for our waiter to come by the table, the owner came and spoke with us and even got our orders in for appetizers which was really nice) and the food was quite good as well. All in all we would definitely go back there again but our experience was soured b/c of the issues in the beginning.

“New dining experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

The DW and I wanted Italian and chose this place from TA reviews. Arrived about 5:45 on a Tuesday night to find out that each Tuesday this restaurant has a family style dinner only from about 5:30 to 7. If you want to order from the menu come back at 7.

As one of the last couples to show up we were seated at the bar as all of the end to end tables were already filled. The program is a 4 course dinner for $17 with each course served to all diners at the same time. First course was a tasty soup. Second was a so-so spinach salad, third was two different pastas, one bland and the other tasty, and the fourth was an excellent pork roast.

Meal overall was decent but the family style concept unique. Next year will go back for the menu items.

“Great pasta and salads”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Staying a couple of nights in pacific grove and were looking for a good meal, not too much and not too expensive. We were seated immediately, given menus, brought water and bread with a plate of balsamic vinegar, olive oil, roasted red pepper. Delicious, although when I took a photo of it it looked like intestines. Shared spaghetti with creamy pesto sauce and a green salad with white and red beans. Perfect amount for moderate appetites. Smarmy waiter, but we're good at ignoring. Going back for their "Workman's Lunch," $9.50 for 2 pastas, salad, soup, and I think a dessert. Family style.
