While visiting our daughter who moved to Pacific Grove 7 years ago, we took her out to dinner on a Friday night at the Point Pinos Grill (which apparently is only open for dinner on Thursday through Sundays because it's located in a neighborhood public golf course). They're open early every day of the week for the golfers. The minute you walk inside to high beam ceilings, full 2-story windows that look out over Monterey Bay, and a roaring fire you feel so comfortable. The fact that the dinners are top notch and very gourmet is icing on the cake! And speaking of cake, be sure to leave room for the homemade desserts...

The Point Pinos Grill is a terrific restaurant that just happens to be at a golf course. We have lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 13 years, and have tried most of the restaurants here. While there are a host of restaurants that are high-priced, we are contunually challenged to fine ones that are consistently excellent for the entire dining experience. The restaurants here seem to cater to the "one-time" tourist trade, and do not seem to try to garner repeat business from the locals.

The Point Pinos Grill we found to be an excellent restaurant. We got reservations and arrived at about 7:30 PM on a Friday evening. There were only two other tables filled. When we departed around 9:00 PM, we were the only ones in the place besides the staff. We ordered the dungeness crab and mushroom in a phyllo dough pastry as an appetizer, and it was perfect. The entrees were the New York steak, and the grilled chicken breast. The New York steak presented more like a filet, was trimmed of fat, and was between 1.5 and 2 inches thick, and cooked to perfection. It was served over roasted fingerling potatoes which were also perfectly cooked. The chicken breast was perfectly prepared, tender, juicy, and delectable. The meal started with freshly baked biscuits that were brought to the table still on the baking sheet, and were warm, flaky, and perfectly cooked. We did not have coffee or dessert.

For people who associate a good dining experience with heaping mounds of food, this may not be the place for you. The portions were more than adequate for us, and I only managed to finish a half of the New York steak (plus a few bites of chicken). The presenation was excellent, and the quality of the food was outstanding. The waitstaff is great (thanks Aaron!) and quite knowledgable on wines. The menu is on the small side, but there seems to be something for everyone. We think Chef Dory Ford has hit a home run with this place, and we hope that the local Pacific Grove politics do not get in the way of making this restaurant the huge success it deserves to be. We are pretty picky about restaurants if we are going to spend $100 per couple for dinner, and Point Pinos Grill is worth it. Please take our recommendation and go experience this place - you will not regret it!

This may be the best restaurant in PG. Located at the PG municipal golf course it is a bit of a sleeper but on Thursday through Saturday they serve dinner and it is great. Wonderfully creative dishes at a very fair price. Thr the Cioppino it is all seafood and a light broth that is unlike any you've had before. You won't be disappointed
