Good choice for the price, and it several items to choose from. Service was great, and family pride shows.

“Am jealous - unwanting to share, but....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2011

Do you ever n-o-t want to share a favorite restaurant, employee or hotel because it may cause the specialness to become more inaccessible? What a gem - Max's; savory food, kind, attentive service, reasonable prices. The place deserves a line out the door of waiting, appreciative customers. I'm an old experienced diner, know my food - Max's provides a savory experience.

“definately go here- sensational”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2011

we were looking for a place to eat in Pacific grove, and found this place online.
driving to it we stopped outside, and it was empty - looking in from outside it does not look like much - so we had to get over this step.... so we then went in.
we were greeted really nicely, taken to our table, and then given the menus.
there is a 25$ menu which allows you to choose between starters and entrees, which was nice, and then you could also dine A'la carte.
the salad was fresh, and just perfect, and the meet was "drop from the bone" excellent.
its a family run establishment - and as said, when i was there it was quite empty, so i am not sure how it will go if it is full with service - but they were very attentive to us.... and the food was perfect

“Compare Max's with Passionfish”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2011

I have to give Max an average rating because my wife and I split severely; otherwise it would merit an extra star:

I enjoyed Max's thoroughly; she disliked her food to the point where she questioned the quality of its preparation.

Max's is run by a husband and wife team. I like that.
The space is charming. Not fancy.

The menu is far, far more extensive than Passionfish (about which we also disagreed, in the opposite direction).

My tri-tip pot roast was more-than-enough for dinner, and really satisfying with a good glass of cabernet.

However, my wife's sand-dabs left her with the taste that they'd been pan-fried in old oil.

Ms. Max told us that Max had used olive oil; perhaps that was the problem (not a great choice for high heat pan-frying -- Peanut oil, canola, even butter would have avoided the old-oil taste).
And she said that they would have used butter if we'd asked.
I like a kitchen that accommodates diners.

I'd encourage any Pac Grove / Monterey / Carmel visitor to stop in to Max's and give it a try. Really. It's clearly a better value than the other restaurants in Pac Grove and vicinity, and we didn't mention the Sand Dabs -- and only mildly, then --- until we had finished.

“Slightly Over-rated”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2011

Little storefront restaurant on side street. Other than white tablecloths the table settings and decor were minimal and had no charm whatsoever. Service was attentive and welcoming. There is a regular menu and a fixed 3 course menu for $25 which I had. There were 3 entree choices (including a regular higher priced entree), soup or salad, and either a glass of wine or a dessert so was a good deal from that standpoint. Dessert offering was limited to ice cream & mousse. My husband had the special which he thought was OK. Everything was cooked properly. The meals were better than what you'd get at a coffee shop but not a rave by any means. Prices reflected this niche - entrees were in the upper teens. We've also tried Fifi's. It too has a French bent, similar prices, and a fixed price offering. Fifi's was much more charming, offered about the same level of cuisine, but we liked the menu choices at Max's better. Good places to go If you want to get away from the tourist crowd & have decent food at a reasonable price.
