“I was not staying but Unfriendly parking!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

I did not stay this trip, but I did have an unfortunate accident on the grounds. I entered a cramped, inconvenient, unclear 10 minute parking lot next to the cafe and pulled past a row that was full, only to be met by a Do-not-enter sign. As I attempted a three point turn, my attention on a rock wall, I heard a crunch. Posts too low to be observed through my rear view. OKAY, MY MISTAKE, BUT! Why are the posts edged in sharp, thick metal lethal to bumpers??? I was moving slowly and with a wooden post would probably have sustained little or no damage. The metal sliced through the light cover and began slicing through the bumper. This will be an expensive repair. Is this new with Aramark? To me this is a complete disregard for visitors from a place I have found somewhat impersonal and mediocre when I have stayed here before.
I will most likely never stay again, nor recommend it, in spite of its proximity to a beautiful beach.

Room Tip: Be very careful driving in this place. Look out for one ways!

Asilomar is just steps away from a beautiful beach near Monterrey. The rooms are state owned and very basic - large but no TV, furniture from the 50's and in need of spiffing up. However, it is a great place for a retreat. The food at the resort (all buffet) is basic but good and vegetarian and special meals are available.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closest to the beach. Please note all the balconies face away from the beach. Howev...

While Asilomar is not a 5 star resort I did find it comfortable and convenient for the retreat i attended there. The rooms had nice fireplace (very welcome in January), and were comfortable enough. I found the food to be surprisingly good, served Cafeteria style. The meals had three options, one was always a vegetarian. There was attention to special diets, such as gluten free. The grounds are spread out so be prepared to walk to meals or meeting. The meeting room we used was spacious, with lots of windows and a big fireplace. Cookies were provided by the kitchen as well as coffee and tea. There was some construction going on, improvements to walkways and grounds I think. The grounds are not manicured, but rather the natural environment, we saw deer on the property, and of course the ocean is a short walk away. Bicycles are available for rent and it is a short, pleasant ride to Cannery Row in Monterey, as we biked we saw whales off the coast. The Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary is a short walk away, very interesting-don't miss it. The Store has many basics you might need, as well as some unique souvenirs. The check in staff was friendly, efficient, check in time on a Friday afternoon can get quite busy. I recommend Asilomar as an affordable, well located meeting/retreat destination.

Room Tip: The room I had was nestled in the woods, and was assigned by the group I traveled with. If I were t...

Stayed in a historic room with hardwood floors and craftsman era furniture. Julia Morgan's architecture connects with the sea and history in a harmonic way. The travel zoo pkg for $99/nite with breakfast for 2 was a wonderful deal so we upgraded to a view room for an addl $40/nite. The staff at the reception and in the eating hall was attentive. Lots of construction on the grounds going on that was inconvenient for walkers. Gorgeous 3 sunny days spent, aquarium, Big Sur, and gorgeous sunsets. Not quite Hawaii but a quick getaway from the East Bay. We loved our stay.

I have attended about 11 of these quilting seminars at Asilomar since the late 1990s. The charm of the facilities and grounds make this the perfect place for a week-long experience. The food is excellent. It has varied over the years, depending on the food service contract holder. Right now it is wonderful and should continue to be so in years to come. Seating in the dining hall consists of tables for 10 (segregated by conference, of course) so that mingling with others in your conference is encouraged. The quilting seminars (there are 4 or 5 each year) consist of about 200 students and a dozen teachers each session, to give an idea of the size of accommodations available.

Many of the buildings go back to the turn of the previous century but have been modernized with up-to-date bathrooms. The beds are comfortable. The meeting rooms vary depending on the building and size of the conference. Same for the housing accommodations. Some are rustic, yes; some have been built later. By no means is this to be considered a "modern hotel or motel" experience but rather a chance to be in a very lovely setting kept as natural as possible. It's a step back into serenity and oceanside beauty away from traffic and hassle.

It's a special place for conferences and seminars because of its setting and the deliberate lack of TVs and telephones in the rooms. People come here to be focused and not to be distracted by more modern appointments. Now that cellphones and laptops are common, wifi service is available in the main registration building.

Asilomar was created in the late 1800s by the wives of very wealthy San Franciscans as a retreat for poor women/girls under YWCA auspices. The land they acquired was expensive then and priceless now. The foundation found the taxes unbearable later in the 1900s and ultimately turned the property over to the California State Parks system, which manages it today. Check the nearby attractions in the Monterey area to see why this location is so special.

With Asilmar's history in mind, it continues to be a favored site for business conferences as well as for specialties like Empty Spools Seminars (now past its 25th year and counting). I look forward to many more visits to this beautiful, calming, "rustic" location.

The grounds are gorgeous, as many reviewers have said, with beautiful ocean views, boardwalks to the beach and even deer are sometimes seen wandering around. Also, the full breakfast, included with the room, was very good and the staff friendly.

The reception staff acted like they were doing you a favor by letting you check and the permanent scowl on one of them betrayed an attitude that shouldn't be allowed near the public.

Though the beds were comfortable, the rooms were shabby - in poor condition. A motel 6 would have been a big improvement. The water flowed slowly, the fan didn't work in the bathroom, the shower had a rusted out soap dish, the miniscule soaps would be OK for hand soaps but inadequate for a shower. There were many areas needing improvement and maintenance, and the decor appeared not to have been touched since the mid '80s. "Rustic" is way too nice a word to describe the lodging. We won't be back!

Because we were there on a TravelZoo special, the $99 room price was about right, given the grounds, the proximity to the ocean and the good breakfast. But full price would have been a poor bargain, since you could easily find a B&B for the same price with a full breakfast, a charming room and hosts, somewhere near a beach.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room facing the water with unobstructed view. Many rooms have a boring or non...

We have stayed at Asilomar many times; in the old Julia Morgan rooms, the newer rooms, and the motel rooms; while they are all fine, my preference is the older rooms; very clean, plenty of room, and lots of character. The older rooms are a great deal, especially on the monterey bay; and the rooms include a very decent breakfast in the main hall. The location, and proximity to great beaches cannot be beat; also, you are on the bus line that can take you all over the peninsula, including carmel. This lovely center is walking distance to Spanish bay, in pebble beach, where rooms start at $600; and here we payed $120, including tax; the best deal going!!
