My husband and I stayed overnight at Asilomar so we could play golf at Pacific Groves Links and Blackhorse-Bayonnet in Seaside which are both a 5-10 minute drive away. We stayed in a second story room in a building which was renovated in the 1960's. The staff had taken some extra time to find us a "room with a view" and we were not disappointed. We had a balcony looking out onto the ocean, forested grounds and walkways. The room was VERY large, clean, and as promised, rustic. We ate dinner outdoors at the new cafe instead of eating in the noisy cafeteria with hundreds of other people. It was one of the most pleasant one night stays I can remember in a long time...peaceful, comfortable, excellent staff and incredibly reasonable for the Monterey Peninsula. I would stay again in a flash.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and view of the ocean

My family and I have gone to asilomar each year for the past several years. The biggest downside is the price. These are conference style hotel rooms. The facilities and beds are nothing to write home about, and compared to the other hotels available at the same price, they are a bit underwhelming.
That being said, the location is ideal. It is the best location, and grounds in Pacific Grove. Most of the hotels are smaller, and farther from the beach. Asilomar has a trail that goes right to the beach, and the grounds are extensive. There are always animals out and about, and many of the rooms have sliding glass doors, so you can watch them go by.
The service is professional, and accommodating. We always ended up swithing rooms around, and they were great about it. My husband and I like the fireplace rooms, on the ground floor so you can watch animals, my brother and his wife prefer the rooms without fireplaces, because they have asthma. My mom prefers the historic room, because of their character.
It is a great place, and there are different types of accommodation for different people, but you definitely pay the price.

Room Tip: Breakfast is big and plentiful, but get there early. You will be sharing a table with other guests, so be willing to make small talk.

We had an opportunity to stay at Asilomar Conference Ground, a State of California Park the weekend of September 15th & 16th, 2012. Room was a one bedroom, one bath with a view located in the Long View North building.
This review has to be broken into three parts; 1. If you have ever stayed at Asilomar you will already have knowledge of the history and accommodations, 2. If you have not stayed at Asilomar and 3. State Park of California.
Lets' start by saying this is a California State Park that is run and managed by ARAMARK a concession contractor. All our state parks are suffering in this ecomony due to lack of funds and Asilomar is no different. ARAMARK is doing a great job and the people are the best; helpful, courtesy, doing a great job with what they have to work with. They put on a great breadfast.
Asilomar has history and a lot of it - do your research. Asilomars highest and main attraction/draw is its conference center, location and historic preserve. Asilomar fits a specific niche. Should that niche wane - this facility will collapse - economically and phyiscally.
If you have stayed at Asilomar you know all the enjoys and memories it has and will have. It is a time capsule protected from the world. You are a walk to the ocean & beaches. Peaceful setting, no hassle and bustle, casual camp dress, no TV, good pool, one with nature with a great Wi-Fi. Would I stay again at Asilomar - Yes.
If you have not stayed at Asilomar. You need to ask yourself "What type of accommodations do you seek" If it does not match with the above comments - go find a Hotel. Walk around the facility first then ask to see your room before you commit. Yes it is hard to get rooms at Asilomar and the rooms vary in quality, condition and location.
Our room had a great view of the trees, beach, sand and ocean with a glorious sunset view view but was dated, Non-smoking room yet still an odor of smoke, older bath room in desperate need of repair and remodel (peeling wall paper, discolored shower grout and some cleaning issues). Beds were good, clean linen, soft pillows. We had aspecial rate of $131 per night for two nights including breadfast and it was worth the price.
Great Restaurant and Bar - The Fishwife, within walking distance.

Does anyone know what is Red Chinese building(small house) just 40 feet north of the Asilomar swimming pool is? It is tucked down into the sand dunes and appear to be a private residences or monument.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you commit.

We stayed over Labor Day weekend. Our room was nothing fancy although it was equipped with a fire place. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Staying here felt like camping in a National Park. We enjoyed our stay and would return. It is a short walk from the room to the ocean, and there is a great restaurant (The Fish Wife) a short walk as well.

Stayed several days at Asilomar. Absolutely beautiful nature settings. The accommodations were modest but provided everything one would need: breakfast buffet, heated pool, access to the beach, close location to downtown and other local attractions. Overall it was a good stay.

Room Tip: Ask to see your room before you check in.
