“Comfortable & a good value”
Reviewed January 29, 2008

We stayed mid-week at the Gosby and rates were quite reasonable. Room #17 is on the ground floor and was a nice size. The queen size bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The Victorian is filled with antiques and had a comfortable, somewhat warn-in feel. This wasn't the fanciest B&B in the area, but it was comfortable and pleasant.

Breakfast was served starting at 8 am, and included coffee/tea, juices, cereals, muffins, very nice fresh fruits, and one hot egg dish. We at right at 8 am, so the eggs were fresh & warm. I don't know how often they brought out new hot dishes though. The staff was very friendly and the location is great if you prefer the low key feel of Pacific Grove vs. Carmel or Monterey. We love PG, and highly recommend dinner at Passion Fish. It's just over a block away from the Gosby.

  • Liked — Clean and comfortable. A good value.
  • Disliked — 8 am breakfast start is late for us early risers.

This place is wonderful! Well situated on the main street (quiet) with restaurants around. The house is large, with beautiful comfortable rooms, wonderful linens, excellent service and meals. Turn down service at night included chocolate and a rose. The only caution is that one of our rooms had no TV and would be crowed for 2 (#8). We also had # 11 which was spacious, charming in shape and decoration, did have a TV and had a great large fireplace.

We stayed at Gosby House for three nights in mid-August. Our room was No.2, the Steinbeck, aka the turret room, which is situated on the second floor above the entrance.

The room was exceptionally cozy and charmingly decorated. It included a sitting area of two armchairs and a table by the windows in the round turret-bay. The view is toward the main street and the bay beyond.

There is a quaint old sink in the room, but the shower and toilet are outside in two separate locations in the hall. They are, however, set aside exclusively for the Steinbeck room guests.

We enjoyed the old-world ambiance, the comfortable bed, and the fresh rose in a bud vase on the dresser. There were plenty of fluffy towels, and the room was very clean.

The inn's public rooms consist of a parlor and a breakfast/reception room, each with a number of small tables that are set for breakfast. Neither room is particularly cozy or inviting for evening lounging. The tendency is to walk past them to one's room.

Breakfast is decent and no more. The juice is not fresh squeezed, the coffee is ok but not memorable, and there's little variety in the baked goods: one type of bagel and two kinds of muffins appear day after day. There was a selection of fresh fruit, which did not vary from one day to the next except in the way they were cut. The same egg dish with minor variations appeared each morning -- a kind of flat and airy soufflé or frittata, which became monotonous the second time we saw it. On the third morning we'd had enough and decamped for Toasties Cafe at 702 Lighthouse Avenue.

The office staff is friendly and will make restaurant reservations on your behalf.

The location is excellent.

Gosby House is a great b&b. The rooms are very nicely decorated, antique furniture, great beds, nice size rooms and private baths. The people (Honey) make it exceptionally welcoming and pleasant. Turn down service includes a bear on your bed, a fresh rose every night and chocolates. The breakfast is a feast, changing daily. Coffee and teas all night long, with fresh pastries for your late nite snacking. Gosby House is very convenient to shops, restaurants, the beach, Monterey and Spanish Bay Inn. It was a great find. Wireless internet reception excellent in the downstairs lobby lounges. Highly recommended and I would stay there again. Great customer service.

We were travelling through America and had intented staying in Monterey, however after reading the guidbook decided to try Pacific Grove. We were not dissapointed it is so quaint and almost in a time warp. We picked Gosby House and after a few failed attempt to find it as the street signing is a bit difficult we contacted Gosby House and they guided us there.

We had a choice of two rooms and chose one with a separate entry and as the place is know for its teddies was not surprised to find one in the bed. The room was very large and comfortable with a sitting area as well.

After we went to the main hotel for wine and nibbles and found it a nice way to meet other people. It is a lovely area to walk in with plenty of good resturants close by.

We found the staff very helpful and as I unfortunatly was unwell the local chemist and Doctors were very helpful.

I would thouroghly recommend not only Gosby House but Pacfic Grove Give it a try.

  • Liked — The quaint decoration it was so different from the normal hotel room
  • Disliked — Directions to it

We found the place very twee, lots of roses on the wallpaper including the ceiling, and teddy bears everywhere, but our stay there was really pleasant. We were in the Dr. Hart room which was an incredible bargain for a large and really comfortable room, the bed was superb, and the service was excellent, food lovely especially breakfast, and lots of complimentary things. The staff were really warm and hospitable. It was much nicer than a standard hotel for half the cost, and we would highly recommend it. The area is great as well, with two superb restaurants - Passionfish and The Cellar, just beside the Inn. You can walk to Cannery Row from there and the views are brilliant.

We booked here for one night before our flight home. This is your quaint Victorian grandma's house.(the kind you know most men hate except if they're gay).Gosby Inn is on a nice street with great places to eat nearby. It was nice to get some cake and sherry in the afternoon when we arrived. Our room was so samll and very hard to move around but it looked out on the garden.I cant say anything about breakfast as we had to leave very early. So it was not worth the extra money for it to be included but it was a nice different place to stay
