“We waited 25 years to stay here -- Well worth the wait!”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

We stayed at the Seven Gables Inn for our 25th anniversary after seeing the inn for the first time on our honeymoon. We booked our room three months out after much research. I finally called the Inn and asked which room we should book from the three we were interested in. My initial pick was Seal Rocks, and I was told by the lady taking the reservation that it was her favorite. We were after the view.

We were contacted via email two weeks before arrival and via phone about one week out. These were very nice touches. I informed Laila that I have a handicap parking placard, and she informed me that there would be a reserved parking spot for us.

We arrived about an hour before check-in with plans to just "hang out". Our parking spot was right where we had been told it would be. The grounds are exquisite with every square Inch beautifully utilized and maintained. We were met at the front door by Donna who gave us a tour of the property. Each room was more beautiful than the next. She then showed us to our room which was in the Beach House next door. When she opened the door to our room, there it was -- THE view! Breathtaking doesn't even begin to describe it. Stunning. Spectacular. Heaven on Earth.

The room was exactly as it was depicted on the website. Beautifully appointed. We knew when reserving that it was not an extra large room, but it had a queen bed, two easy chairs with a table in between, a nightstand, a window seat, and a beautiful wardrobe that housed plenty of hanging space, three drawers, and three slide outs (where you could put more clothes, etc. The bathroom was small with a single sink and little vanity. It was all marble. There was a shelving unit above the toilet that accommodated all of our products. There was a tub/shower combination. Plenty of towels. Lovely bath products. We stored our suitcases between the bed and the wall, so they were out of our way.

The bed linens were heavenly! So luxurious and the bed was comfortable.

Each day at 4:00 pm there was a lovely wine and cheese reception with at least four choices of wine and non-alcoholic sparkling choice. There we were cheeses, crudités with dip, crackers, dip, and fudge. There is always coffee, tea, and cocoa. The dips and spreads changed daily. This was also a chance to meet our fellow guests. Such sweet people! At 8:00 the homemade cookies and milk are available! These also changed daily. Yummy!

Each night our bed was turned down with Dove chocolates and a menu for the following morning's breakfast. Our room was above the dining room, and we heard very little noise from the staff. I cannot speak to the noise from the breakfast itself because we were always in the dining room from the start. What a beautiful room with stunning views and a fireplace. Attentive service. The food was delicious! We were there for four mornings. We enjoyed some of the food more than others, but that can be said of any place. There was always something wonderful to choose from. We were never disappointed.

The staff was out-of-this-world. The maids did a superb job. Everything was impeccably clean! Everyone was so friendly and eager to help. We thoroughly enjoyed each and every one we met. They truly seemed to enjoy their job and seemed proud of the inn. We loved them all: Laila, Rosita, Donna, Athena, and the lovely Linda! We miss y'all!

We were able to "peek" in several of the other rooms. The website is spot on with the pictures and descriptions. Our room was on the front of the Beach House with the street right below us. We heard very little street noise, but our windows were closed at night. We adored our room, but next time I'd like it try a different room for the fun of it! Don't shy away from the ground floor rooms -- they are wonderful. If you need privacy, just close the blinds! And the ground floor rooms allow you to view the gorgeous grounds as well as the bay!

This is a topnotch property in every way! You cannot beat the location, service, food, and views! Do not hesitate, but book early in order to get the exact room you want. We will be back as often as possible! Thank you to the incredible owners and staff for making our 25th anniversary such a memorable one!

This was an exquisite experience from the moment we walked on the grounds. All of the staff were professional, lovely and easy to work with. As other reviews have noted, the wine and cheese evenings are charming, breakfast delectable. And the views--no beating those (though stronger binoculars would be great!). We stayed in the Bellevue room and could easily have spent all day every day in the sitting area--though it does get a bit warm, with the sun bursting in. Luckily, the windows open and offer a nice sea breeze. The bed was amazingly comfortable, and not just because of the 'comfy sheets' they're shilling at every turn. I also enjoyed the Victorian era feel, yet nothing was creaky, worn or breaking. One thing to keep in mind--this is a relatively large B&B. So if you're looking for the intimate experience where the innkeeper greets you by name, you won't find it here. Also, because of the number of guests, both the wine and cheese time and breakfast can get a bit cacophonous. But that in no way cancels out the benefits.

This is a lovely B&B / boutique inn in an excellent location, directly across from the water and within very easy walking distance of the little village of Pacific Grove as well as all of Monterey. The rooms are very clean and well appointed, albeit very small (smaller than they appear on the hotel's website). The views, location, and comfortable hotel are the main reasons to stay here. It is rather (over) pricey, on a relative basis, compared to other high quality boutique hotels in the Monterey Peninsula / Carmel area, but for the specific location, it is the place to stay. Staff is very polite and friendly. The wine and cheese late afternoon reception is lovely. The only drawback is that the kitchen prep for breakfast starts very early and the scent / odor (take your pick) is very noticeable in the predawn hours - if you don't like smelling sausage cooking at 4 am, stay in a room in a building away from the kitchen.

We want to thank our Colorado guests for their very positive comments about Seven Gables. Looking at the reviews for other areas that they have visited as well as the establishments in their local area, we can see that they are very discriminating in their evaluations with only 20% of their total reviews rated at 4 stars or above, which was the rating of their stay at Seven Gables. We are surprised, however, that these guests found our website to be inaccurate. The majority of the guest comments about the website are that it is very accurate and helpful. There are at least 3 photos of every room and a full description of the amenities in each room to assist guests in their decision making. We are very careful to represent the rooms exactly as they are and we maintain that our rates for comparable boutique hotels in the area offer better value for the quality, location, and service that we offer. In addition, our staff is always happy to show guests alternate rooms upon arrival since we have such a wide variety of room sizes, ocean views and room rates. Finally, we are so sorry to hear that the aromas from the kitchen bothered them in the early morning. Our Chef comes in at 5am to begin breakfast preparation. Our kitchen is located on the 1st floor and our guest rooms are on the 3rd and 4th floors. He prepares the freshly baked item first with the meat preparation done just before the breakfast service begins at 8am in order to present a hot, fresh entree.
We hope that these guests enjoyed their visit to California and look forward to seeing them on their next visit to the Monterey area.

We spent 2 nights here at the start of our California road trip. We stayed in the Gable room which had beautiful views of the sea and Lover's Point and was very private. The wine and cheese early evening is a lovely idea and is a great way for people to meet and share stories. The buffet breakfast was very good and the staff were lovely and unobtrusive. A couple of points to be aware of - it is rather chintzy and definitely appeals to an older clientele, I'm 45 and felt young. It is pricey, but the location and views from our room made it well worthwhile in my view.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a sea view, note the ones on the ground floor lack privacy as most have paths...

We appreciate these guests from the UK with their kind comments about their stay with us. We have a wide variety of guests of all ages that stay with us for anniversaries, honeymoons and birthdays but mid-week in fall and winter we have quite a few guests that are not constrained by children’s school schedules or work requirements who enjoy taking advantage of the lowest rates of the year from Sun-Thurs. through the end of April. It may be a somewhat more mature group than we would typically have on weekends. We feel that we need to clarify the meaning of the word “chintzy” which in UK English means “ornate” referring to the fine antiques and art featured throughout the Inn. The American English meaning is a very different meaning and means “cheap or shabby” which does not describe Seven Gables Inn at all. We are always happy to assist guests with their selection of rooms and to help them pick a room that is within their price requirements. No matter which room our guests choose, the service and quality will be the same. We hope to have these guests stay with us on their next trip to the U.S.

Our memorable experience began the moment we were greeted in the reception area. My eyes immediately surveyed the lovely scene before me..French antiques, crystal chandeliers, a quaint fireplace, and the beauty of a collection of oil paintings, which graced the walls. We arrived in the late afternoon, and were immediately given a tour of the premises. Each room spoke to me; the furnishings, design, and artwork were simply exquisite..As our tour concluded, we were shown to an area where a daily complementary wine and cheese reception had begun. Freshly baked cookies and milk are offered each early evening, as well as a full breakfast in the breakfast room, which overlooks the waves crashing against the shore. The ocean views are incomparable. As we enjoyed our afternoon snacks, we were literally greeted by the sight of several whales, who announced their presence directly in our line of sight, through an expanse of large picture windows. My husband and I have traveled extensively, both for business and pleasure, and regard The Seven Gables Inn as our most romantic getaway. We have already booked our next trip there!

This was the highlight of our trip to California. The room was beautiful as were all the rooms in the Inn that we viewed. We cannot say enough about the staff and the amenties. We totally appreciated the daily wine and cheese as well as the cookies and milk in the evening.
The breakfast always started our day out right. We would highly recommend this beautiful bed & breakfast Inn and will most definitely return.

Room Tip: Choose the Stienbeck room but all rooms have a beautiful view of the Bay.

My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the Seven Gables Inn. We were greeted warmly, given a tour around the facilities and escorted to our charming room where roses, wine and chocolate awaited us. It was Christmas time and the Inn was exquisitely decorated for the season. The weather was perfect. We slept with the windows open, the waves breaking just outside our room, and the fireplace embers glowing in the dark. Perfect romance! We enjoyed five fabulous nights there and never wearied for something new and exciting to do. So much within walking distance and the staff is fabulous when it comes to suggestions and setting up reservations for us (they have connections!) Breakfasts were out of this world and varied every morning--but always with lots of fresh pastries and fruit in addition to tasty entrees. Wine-tasting party every evening provided great visiting with other guests and staff; late night cookie time was the perfect touch for the end of a day, as well as the turn-down and chocolates on the pillows. Five days just wasn't enough as I've never been so relaxed and so pampered.

Room Tip: Rooms closest to the bay provide best panoramic views and the roar of the ocean is so soothing. We...
