“Not bad, not great”

This place was fine, but I didn't love it.

Pros: Inexpensive. Lots of space. Well-stocked, new-looking kitchen.

Cons: Internet confusion. Not really that quiet. A bit beat up.

Details:

My room was huge. Even with the almost full kitchen (everything but an oven), there was lots of space.

The kitchen was nice, too. A full sized refrigerator with freezer. Very well stocked with plates, glasses, pots & pans, utensils. New-looking appliances.

The bed was comfortable if you like a firm bed. This hotel is doing what all the hotels seem to be doing now. A sheet + a duvet. I find the comforter heavy and hot and would much rather have a sheet and a blanket, but I am apparently in the minority.

The morning breakfast was fine. Run-of-the-mill, but better than your average Hampton Inn, for example. Can't complain too much about free breakfast!

The room was clean. Other than in the new-looking kitchen, the furnishings seemed a bit battered. The exterior of the hotel looks kind of beaten and worn as well.

The hotel has free wireless. Unfortunately, the internet instructions in the room still say that you have to connect by the provided wired connection and that wireless is only available in the lobby. But the wired connection doesn't work. To further compound the confusion, the free wireless connection is unhelpfully named "Wireless211" and is not the strongest nearby wireless signal. To even further compound the confusion, the person at the desk clearly did not understand my question about the trouble I was having connecting to the internet and gave me the phone number of the internet service company so that I could call them myself. What?! Every room should have the correct connection information: Connect to Wireless211, open your browser, agree to the things they want you to agree to, and you're on. Simple.

The hotel looks like a lush, landscaped condo complex bordered by a golf course. The rooms are excellent - smallest room is a 550 square foot Queen studio with premium furnishings and kitchen. The FREE breakfast buffet is the best I've experienced in the USA and equal to any hotel that charges $15 or more per person! Monday through Thursday, the hotel offers, for FREE, wine, beer and a schedule that includes dinner ranging from BBQ to tacos. The staff is exceptionally friendly. We arranged to host a wedding rehearsal dinner for 32 people. The in-house catering company, the room and the service was outstanding.

I need to tell you upfront that we travel a great deal for either fun or work or both. We don't often stay in high end places (four or five stars) but like the middle of the road where you get a SAFE place with good bang for the buck. We booked via Marriott on the phone but researched a little online first. I'd suggest calling instead of trying to book online because for some reason not all of the options/locations populate during an area search. When you call they are extremely helpful in accommodating all needs (price, location, pets, etc).

Pro #1: Extended stay and pet-friendly. While there's a non-refundable $100 pet sanitation fee-- if you're staying for more than four days you will break even compared to most middle of the road chains who charge by the day and per dog. We're staying for at least a month, which by the way is where the price break point seems to be...we have AAA as our discount currently (paying under 100/day).
Pro #2: Free evening food and beverage (also beer & wine for over 21) on weeknights (not Friday, Sat, Sun). For free food and bev the quality is really good. So you can save money this way and save stress by NOT having to track down a place to eat. Free breakfast buffet that is really good. NOTE: If you're inclined to enjoy dinner of porterhouse, potato, desert and wine then you might not appreciate the free amenities.
Pro #3: Nice bed and pillows in the suite rooms. Suite set up includes kitchen usuals (all but oven). You could easily feed the kids and spouse if you show up with your groceries and spices.
Pro #4: Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Acknowledged in a friendly way during entire stay by all members of staff/help.
Pro #5: Easy to get to other destinations like the beach/harbor but NOT so close. In other words you can drive or bike to the party area but not have to try to sleep through the beach evening activities.
Pro #6: Craving station (they call it The Market). If you have a hankering for candy, chips, soda and didn't bring your own you can meander to the front desk area and see a smaller selection of chocolate, ice cream, soda. Or go to the washer/dryer room near your suite and use the vending machines.
Pro #7: Big 32" swivel based TV in your suite. If you like to relax and watch movies you'll probably enjoy this feature.
Pro #8: Romantic? Fireplace that uses composite log available from the front desk, currently $5. Or bring your own indoor/outdoor composite log (Duraflame). NO regular wood!
Pro #9: Free, ample parking either in the parking lot (nested inside living complexes) or street side surrounding the Residence Inn compound.
Pro #10: Smoke free (if this matters to you).
Pro #11: Clean suites. Nicely appointed. Redecorated/remodeled in 2009.

Con #1: Fast food chains are in the area as are local eateries. You could actually walk to some of them if you don't mind a 1 mile walk (2-2.25 miles round trip). Or you could drive and find a number of places to eat along hwy 1/Oxnard Blvd. But you won't be getting room service unless you call for delivery.
Con #2: Noise from outdoor stairwells. The stairwells are wrought iron/steel so if you end up with a large group near your suite you might hear trips in and out. If you have ever lived in an apartment building you can relate.

For the price, given the geographical area, you will find this Residence Inn hard to beat. If you want to be right on the beach every single day/night you'll pay bit more of course. We often stay in Holiday Inn chains/LaQuinta Inn chains with the higher ratings generally. Once in a while we splurge on a five star place for a weekend get-a-way.

We like to cycle, sit in the spa tub, swim at the pool, eat at the local eateries, relax and watch movies (so you get the idea of what type of evaluator you're getting here).

I was all set for a few days by the beach with my wife and dog. Then this hotel screwed me over. I had confirmed a rate online and they did not honor it. They tried to get me to go to their sister property down the street, but that hotel would not let me stay there with my dog. Call ahead to make sure they accept the rate you get online, they might not honor it when you get there.

I stayed here for two weeks on a business trip. My king suite was like a mini apartment. King bed with great linens and lots of pillow, radio alarm clock, large LCD tv, couch, desk with Internet (computers also available at front desk), and a mini-kitchen. The bathroom was large and well furnished (hair dryer, tons of towels, nice soaps). The location is very nice--easy to get to downtown Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Ventura, as well as hop on the 101 and head either way. I saw other hotels I had considered staying at and the Residene Inn has the advantage of being surrounded by a golf course instead of pavement. It was a quiet location. The breakfast has a very large selection from fresh fruit to eggs to waffles, etc. Very friendly and accomodating staff. Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for five nights at Christmastime. Good value for the money w/free parking. Some of the other Marriott properties in the area charge up to $20/day for parking. Very quiet, as others have noted, on a golf course and in a residential area. The drawback to this is that it is not in walking distance of any restaurant or grocery store.
The breakfast was very good, the evening snack not so good on the nights we were there, but that could have been because it was right before Christmas.
We had a ground floor "suite" and the iron staircase to the upstairs unit is right outside the door. On our last night the person above us had a dog that he walked every few hours during the night, so we were woke up everytime he went up and down the stairs.
We will definitely stay here again as we visit Oxnard every year and this has so far been the best value

Stayed at this hotel for 5 weeks while our house was being fixed from a broken pipe/water damage problem. Our Home Owners Insurance paid for us to stay here and put us up in the two story/ two bedroom unit. The check-in was effortless and the staff were very friendely and helpful. We had a room overlooking the main pool and it included a full kitchen with granite contertops and nice appliances. Breakfast was served every day free of charge in the dining room overlooking the golf course. And on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the hotel offered other food items in the evening. Parking was free and the facility was always clean and the staff very nice and helpful.. We were very impressed with this hotel and believe if you have to stay in Oxnard, you can't go wrong with this property. Although we were happy to be going back home, we were grateful for the great service and wonderful people we encounterd here at this hotel.
