Dairy Queen
Ranked #2 of 2 Dessert in Orangevale

I have only had the ice cream treats (Blizzards) because I was a little afraid of all the flies in and around the restaurant (food contamination and all, yuck). Being that the Blizzards are made as you order them, the chance of having a bad experience goes down. I do like that they updated the sign and made the entrance a little more easier to get to, but they still need to improve the sanitary conditions, both inside and out.

This is an average DQ. The outside paint and signage looks good. Need more lighted parking and staff needs to learn to have fun, smile, TALK, and keep area cleaner.

So here's the deal. This DQ is sitting on a busy and ugly corner of Orangevale and it isn't really very appealing. In spite of this, my family frequently finds itself pulling in for a Summer Ice Cream Cone. Where else can you get soft-serve vanilla dipped in DQ's proprietary chocolate "magic shell"? It's more an experience than anything else, with most patrons dressed in bathing suits after a day at Folsom Lake. As far as their hot food goes, it's edible but by no means gourmet.

This is the classic Dairy Queen Experience, go for the food and especially the milk shakes and other ice cream treats. I love the Dilly Bar, the round vanilla treat coated in chocolate crunchy bliss (frozen hard and you can eat it all before it melts, even in 100 degree heat). Its typical hamburgers and hots dogs menu is satisfying in an All American kind of way, it's the same menu they've had for the last 25 years I've been going there, and I'm sure this place has been here since the 1950's because the building is in that 50's style. There is an indoor dining area and ordering window too. The prices are what you'd expect as this kind of family establishment, and there's often a crowd of people here out front waiting for their made to order food being prepared. The fries are good, the chili dogs are great, and you never leave hungry. What's not to like?

We find that Dairy Queen is too expensive (like most fast food restaurants are). Wendy's is much better on their ice-cream. You can get a delicious frosty at Wendy's for $1.29 small).
I'm just not a fan of this Dairy Queen. Usually is has a well supply of flies all around which is a real turn-off for me.
