In late February, we planned to camp four nights at the fairly expensive Olema Ranch Campground near Point Reyes National Seashore. The first night was fine. The second evening, six or eight people in three tent trailers set up next to us. These folks soon got drunk and noisy and had loud music playing until midnight. We complained in the campground office/store the next morning. The employee on duty wrote up an incident report and told us that the same group had camped there and caused problems the previous year. When we asked whom to contact if there were any further problems after the store closes in the evenings, she initially said we should just call the sheriff, then eventually told us where to find the campground manager. After a great day at Point Reyes, we returned to our campsite at 5 p.m. only to find several more trailers set up with the initial three. The group had grown to twenty of so adults, already well on the way to being inebriated (plus a fair number of kids, from toddlers to teenagers). The raucous laughter, shouting, and bellowing soon escalated to where we could not have a conversation in our trailer because of the noise. Shortly before 10 p.m., we contacted the campground manager, who came over to our trailer a few minutes later and said that 1) the group was going to bed, 2) he hadn't heard a thing, and 3) we were the problem - in his words, "people get to enjoy themselves." The manager appeared to have been drinking himself and became argumentative when we pointed out that our neighbors' behavior was out-of-control and preventing US from enjoying ourselves. He said we should just tell the people ourselves if we had any problems. (Sure, we're going to go and ask a group of twenty or so extremely drunk adults to please be quiet - a few years ago at another campground, a drunk threatened to come back and kill us after we told him to use the bathroom instead of urinating in our campsite!) The manager left, and it did get quiet for a few minutes; but by 10:15 the noise had resumed and was as bad as ever. It finally died down at 1:20 a.m. At 1:30 a.m., one of the drunks started shining his flashlight at our trailer and yelled obscenities at us. Needless to say, we did not stay the fourth night. Upon our return home, I sent a second incident report to Olema Ranch and got a lengthy, astounding e-mail from the manager in return. Far from apologizing for the truly horrible camping experience we had had, he denied the truth of everything we had reported and insinuated that WE were liars and troublemakers. In short, Olema Ranch Campground is a great place to stay if your idea of enjoying yourself is to get drunk and disorderly or to listen to other people being drunk and disorderly - management will give you its blessing. If you like peace and quiet, camp somewhere else.
