“Rustic Oasis Motel - Marginal”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

I'd planned to photograph the Rosewater area on the west side of Death Valley and had made reservations for two nights at the Rustic Oasis Motel. But a recent rain wiped out both roads (Emigrant and Rosewater) that lead there, so I ended up staying only one night. The owner's grandson, an extraordinarily polite and helpful young man who was managing the place (and who learned his politeness, he told me, from his grandfather) was gracious enough to revise my reservation without charge.

I have read and can understand why each reviewer wrote what he or she did, and I wouldn't argue with anyone of them. They are different, but fair.

When I am traveling alone (as I was), my needs are pretty simple: WiFi that works (Twitter to check in) and a place to put my head in a room where the A/C or heater is quiet enough to sleep. The Rustic Oasis Motel strains the limits. Arriving early, I was given room 7 because it allegedly has the best A/C. In August, that is important. Frankly, I couldn't notice any difference between the heat in the room and the heat outside until after sun set when it was cooler outside.

Other reviewers have given adequate descriptions of the rooms. My single was postage stamp size with a bed, closet, chair, frig and TV. I didn't try the TV but it was a curio from the UHF/VHF days with two dials. Because there was no table for my laptop, I used the one outside the managers office. I needed to make a phone call but had no cell phone service out there and the WiFi was too weak to support Google Voice or Skype, so the manage was kind enough to let me use his. "Use it as long as you need to," he said. To close on a positive note, the bed was soft and surprisingly comfortable.

Just don't go there: its Bates Motel. Rustic is the game. Although it is a clean room, it's terrible old and not worth 59 dollars! We have stayed in Motel 6 motels for under 50 bucks and they were clean and good.
On the other hand, it's close to death valley! We stayed one night and that's more than enough.

We stayed here for 1 night after travelling from vegas through death valley. When we arrived we knew it was going to be 'rustic' but thought that it would be fine for a night.
The man who passed the key smelt of alcohol. We were in room 7. The internet didn't work. The bed was so old that when we sat on it you could feel what was left of the springs. As my husband is heavier than me wherever he laid I had to lay as the matress appeared to curl up around you?! The air con was non existent as it was just a blower that was attached to the chimney. The tv was an antique and basically only had one watchable channel. The curtains didn't fit the window and let in light as soon as the sun rose. The door had no lock so we used the security chain. The bed sheets were clean but had holes and wrre too small for the small double curly mattress. The pillows were no existent. The bathroom was ancient but did eventually have warm water. The toilet paper was single ply and so thin that we used the tissues from the tissue box which was thicker.
Sadly our one night cost us 65 dollars and precious sleep since we did not sleep well in the heat and on the most ridiculous hotel matress.
What we thought would be a cheap fun experience actually backfired.

Don't go here. Costly rustic experience. Plenty of better options for the dame price in lone pine, bishop and beyond on this same road

We took it simply for one reason: It is located on the way from Sequioa N.P. thru Death Valley to L.V. We were the only guests... no wonder why. Really old, dirty, damaged. However, wifi was working, and the lady in the office was friedly... before she left the place, leaving us alone in "absolute nowhere".

Before staying I read some negative reviews of this place which we felt were completely unfair - this place is indeed rustic - but for $59 you are staying on the doorstep to Death Valley and amongst the most incredible scenery! If you want modern decor, a flatscreen TV and wifi, then you need to be open to paying more and staying elsewhere. But you should stay here, and spend your evening around the firepit watching the mountains turn pink in the sunset. It's better than anything on television.

The atmosphere here is wonderful - you are miles and miles from anywhere and surrounded by mountains. There is a horseshoe throwing game (which our husbands loved!) but that's pretty much it for entertainment. Olancha is very small - just a gas station and a few houses, but you will probably be able to get some hot food either from the mediocre diner or the Mexican place (which was closed when we were staying there). If you do want more options, your best bet is to drive to Lone Pine, which is about 22 miles further on.

Judy is a wonderful host who worked hard to make us feel welcome, and went way beyond the call of duty by offering us chocolate cake, providing us with kindling and matches so we could sit round the fire, and making us oatmeal in the morning. She gave us lots of information about the local area, places of interest, and even showed us a film sequence in which the motel had appeared (check out this youtube video http://youtu.be/Slg59ufLKXk). She works hard to keep the rooms spotlessly clean, and to offer a friendly welcome, despite the fact that being in the middle of the desert she has limited resources. There are only 8 rooms, and only one other motel in Olancha, so if you're heading to Death Valley NP in the summertime you need to book ahead.

While we were there a couple stormed out complaining that there was no hot water. They refused to allow her to try and fix it, and left. We then went in and both had an excellent hot shower shortly afterwards, so don't believe everything you read or hear. I imagine they had realised that Olancha does not have 2 days worth of activities (!) and had decided to find an excuse to move on.

Our stay was a highlight, and far exceeded our expectations, and sitting by the fire under the stars was a lovely way to spend our evening there. In fact, the showers and service were far better than our "posher" hotel in Vegas, where everyone just tries to take your money all the time. Stay here for a wonderful, wild and rustic experience!

This place is undergoing improvement by the manager, Judy.

Itself is a run down place in the middle of nowhere, but you're in the last frontier so it certainly is the right experience.

There are only a small number of rooms (mine had a large kitchen with fridge and stove) with a big social area outside.

The rooms are spotlessly clean and decorated as though you're in the wild west.

I recommend you stay here as Judy is lovely and has worked very hard to improve this place.

The Motel really is rustic, but quite charming, perfectly located for people on their way to death valley or coming from the south toward east-sierra nevada. not a place to go for an extended vacation, but a good night stop-over place.

Room Tip: The beds in room 6 were a little narrow. I assume it's the same for all rooms.
